I totally agree as I also pay 40% but if my wage was to double or triple in next 12 months I'd be doing chuffing cartwheels not moaning on here (he says jelously)

Wasn't moaning either. Just saying i'm going to be very hard on MOST of my 'income' next year, compared with my current situation.

:)

Wouldn't exactly call myself 'rich'

Providing things keep going the way they are, i'm pretty confident we'll be 'comfortable' later on in life.

My father (who started the company but is now almost retired) is more than comfortable and if he can do it, i certainly can - trust me

God, what have i said? They think i'm 'RB' now

........ err, just took a call - we've lost a massive contract, one of our big client has gone bankrupt, the council have slapped a £250K rates bill through our letterbox.

Lend us a fiver?

As much as it kills me to say it (being a born and bred capitalist), the principle of progressive (i.e. non-flat) taxation works. Period.

Think of it as this, an extra £100 helps someone on 12k a year, a lot more than someone on £100k.

Your problem really lies with where your tax goes, and the size of the "required pot", if you will.

I always knew we had something in common ;)

I don't know how it is in the UK, but in the US, the more money you have the more likely you are to have things (business expenses, mortgage, student loans) that allow you to reduce your tax burden, and/or the more likely you are to have money for accountants to help you reduce that burden. Yes, you pay more, but perhaps not as much more as everyone thinks and think of how much money goes into supporting this kind of system (administration, etc.).

Flat tax. Little/no deductions. Simple and fair.
