Ferry from Barcelona

I will be in Ibiza from August 16-21 2004 and was told that I needed to buy the ferry tickets in advance. I already have the phone number to call for Balearia, and thought that I would be able to buy them at the port. But a friend told me that he didnt buy them ahead of time and was not able to get on the ferry, because they were completely sold out.
 
Is it necessary for me to buy the ferry tickets in advance or is it alright for me to buy them when I get to the port?

i would either reserve them in advance or buy them in advance during the summer months the ferry can get pretty packed so you might find yourself with an already full ferry. THough it is still unlikely i wouldnt risk it.
 
I have decided on taking a plane from Barcelona even though it is more expensive but there are multiple daily flights instead of a ferry that is only available 4 times a week.
