you must have spent half the morning fishing for some dirt on Dubai, there's a whole lot worse things i could list about other city's, A LOT WORSE.

Dubai is virtually crime free, it makes headline news if there is any type of robbery or drug seizure, now i don't know about you but living in a society where it's all but crime free would appeal to most decent law abiding citizens, im not suggesting Dubai and the UAE doesn't have it faults as it does and these are being addressed as my mate who lives there tells me.

Someone mentioned homosexuality being illegal, yes under Islamic law it is and people will do well to remember that Dubai and the UAE is an Islamic country, you might not agree with it (i don't) but if you want to live there you must choose to live under certain rules, as far as im aware anyway there is a thriving underground gay scene in Dubai, one of the Emirates girls i know said one of her colleagues who is gay tells her about it.

You obviously love Dubai as you mention it frequently on here. And i know a lot of people who love it. It's a fascinating place, although i feel no attraction to it.

But you mentioned it was cosmopolitian. It is not.

The dictionary definition is one thing , but as with many commonly used words, often the common intepretation differs slightly, look up the word
"bell-end " to prove my point. (This not directed at anyone it is meant as a joke)

Just because it's stuffed with foreign nationals does't mean it's cosmopolitian.
A jail is not cosmopolitian just because it houses many nationalities. And no I'm not comparing Dubai to a jail. So don't get upset.

For a place to be truly cosmopolitian, it must attract a cross section of nationalities, class and lifestyle choices through it's tolerance and open mindedness, and then in turn rejoice in this diversity, wearing it as a badge of honour. I believe it also must have a rich history and culture.

Then you get a sustainable diversity not simply a big building site manned with foreigners.

We're not talking about crime free zones; this is about child abuse, women abuse and workers' slavery.
I have expat friends who live there and I don't think they have the right picture considering they live in compounds or secluded villas.

Not that I'm a huge Dubai fan... I've only gotten as far as the airport. :lol: But to play devil's advocate:

Firstly, it's not just construction workers there. There's a large expatriate community of people from all over because of all the business out there. For example, my Australian friend that works out there works with partners from the UK.

I don't think you can say that the Arab world lacks "culture". And Dubai was created in the 18th century, so it's got more than 200 years of history (albeit not as a regional hub... that's 30 years in the making)

I at no point said that it was just construction workers in Dubai, i too have friends who work in marketing over there. But I was making reference to the majority of the workers you commented on - above remember?:roll:

I also never said the "ARAB WORLD" lacks culture. Why do you make that reference when commenting on my post??

I was talking about Dubai - remember the thread? Cities??? remember - not civilisations FFS.

I never said it didn't have history - just not a very interesting one.

firstly, if mark had said what you just said to him, you'd accuse him of being racist or bigoted or both.

secondly, culture does not begin when a place is created. cities like liverpool and leeds celebrate their 800th birthdays in 08 and 07 respectively but culturally speaking considering 800 years is wrong.

i thought dubai was nothing but sand until 30 years ago anway.

shows how much you know if you think alcohol is outlawed in Dubai, there are hundreds of bars in Dubai, the only restriction is they have to be attached to Hotels (if you want to call that an actual restriction)

With respect Mark that's absolute rubbish, your trying to imply because Dubai isn't as open minded as other city's it's not cosmopolitan, come now, i think you'll find you can still do anything in Dubai you can do in any other city, it might not be technically legal but does that matter, it's the diversity of people in that city that matters.

I've lived in London and been to NYC and travelled around and ive never seen such a diverse mixture of Nationalities as i did in Dubai, i don't love the place, i think it's a cool city that's all.

And possibly Barcelona. Never been. It is part of our Ibizan honeymoon
