Favourite City's

Having been to Dubai 3 times i can safely say it is very cosmopolitan and is indeed now a world city,it'll also have the most skyscrapers anywhere in the world soon enough, In Dubai you have a massive gap between rich and poor, you have your Jumeriah Janes (Dubai slang for rich/posh) having brunch in the Al Burj Arab Hotel discussing Roberto Cavalli's latest line, and how a good nanny is hard to find thesedays :roll:then you have your Indian/Pakistani migrant worker, slaving it out in 47 degree heat for 6 dollars a day but somehow the system works well and everyone seems blissfully happy although im not that's not always the case but anytime ive been there it seems like that, of course you have some people just earning a decent enough wage as well enough to get by, but it's gone so expensive thesedays, especially property you need to be earning good money to live a good life there, but id still move over there in a flash if i could get a decent job which is easier said than done.

You forgot to mention that workers from India/pakistan/Bangladesh are stripped their passports by their "sponsors". That's slavery

It's illegal to do that, you cant expect people to give up their passports while working in another country.

Istanbul in the summer with all the bars/restaurants/clubs on the bosphorus.
A great place called Hammam for brunches.
Downpoint is traffic.

being cosmopolitan doesn't make it a world city. for me dubai can't (yet) be a world city talked about in the same breath as nearly all the other cities mentioned on this thread because of its lack of culture/history.

Been bidding for lots of work in dubai. All the usual facts apply, more cranes than anywhere in the world etc. Ski Slopes in the middle of the desert and underwater hotels. This is why we pay 1 quid a litre!

However it is miles behind on human rights, and is ruled by the old school clans as per the rest of the UAE. Its just a legalised mafia without the turf wars - patronage rules.

The idea of it being a liberal haven in a muslim world is only true to a degree. There is a reason why salaries are so high to go and work there, and its not related to currency rates.

Employment legislation & company leg firmly in favour of local companies. The note previously made about overseas workers (Particularly lower skilled site workers) having to surrender passports is I believe true. The living conditions for them are believe appalling.

and can where that homosexuality is illegal call itself cosmopolitan, or does the term refer to race only (I dunno?). I think its decades away from being a world city in any description. It needs its building programme to be completed, it to be proved commerically succesfull and then to attract people for reasons of culture, history etc rather than making a quick buck and/or the exclusivity factor.
