I totally forgot about Istanbul. Amazing city... great mixture of old and new. The bazaars, mosques, palaces. The Hagia Sofia. Vibrant nightlife. Gorgeous views of the Bosphorus, etc. Love it.i stick with my previous list.
But I'd love to add the following: Buenas Aries, Istanbul, Singapore.
Anyone been to these?
London/Moscow/New York - the only world cities
they are not the only "world city's" what about Dubai that's a world city, it's also probably the most cosmopolitan city on the planet, Paris, Berlin,Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc the list goes on.
Actually, I'll defend Jonny here. Dubai has thousands of people from all over Asia. OK, sure, many of them are dangling from 200m platforms turning screws into new skyscrapers, but it's not homogenous Arab anymore.
I've got a friend from Australia that spends a lot of time down there as it's become quite the financial hub these days, a Russian friend who works for Emirates and is based there, and an American friend who works at an oil project (month on/month off) and spends his month off in Dubai.
Many wealthy Westerners have snapped up properties there lately as well.
All that said, while I think it's becoming quite cosmopolitan, I don't think it's quite there yet to be called a world city.
Cosmopolitan: composed of people from or at home in many parts of the world; especially not provincial in attitudes or interests.I think it depends on how you defy "cosmopolitan", I dont think a city with a predominantly "middle class" population and little in the way of history can be cosmopolitan in the way thay London, New York, Rio de janiero san Francisco etc are as they have both history and classes from top to bottom!!
Interesting. So, according to the 2004 GaWC Leading World Cities list, "Well-rounded global cities" include: London, New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Boston, Chicago, Madrid, Milan, Moscow and Toronto.johnny and jonny.
i'm not talking about what you consider to be world cities, i'm talking about the recognised/categorised definitions.

Seems like a bit of a Western bias there... in fact, the Wikipedia article has been "nominated to be checked for neutrality."
I think the 1991 assessment of London, New York and Tokyo is a bit outdated.
Agreed. And in 1st or 2nd place. If you'd asked 10-15 years ago, I'd have said NYC is first. Now it's definitely London.i agree the 91 thing is outdated, but the 04 one is open to interpretation. i think whatever way you look at it, london and NYC would always be in the top 2 or 3.
No 1 San Fran, without doubt!!
Paris
Hong Kong
Manilla
Paris
Buenos Aeirres (?)
Chicago
New York
Rome
Mexico City, which is crazy!!
