THE world of football has been stunned by the sudden death of Sevilla defender, Antonio Puerta, who suffered a heart attack during his side’s game against Getafe at the weekend.
The 22-year-old defender collapsed on the pitch during the game and team-mates and medical staff who rushed to his side prevented him from swallowing his tongue as he lost consciousness.
He was able to walk from the pitch but he collapsed again in the dressing-rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being rushed to hospital.
The Spanish internationalist was placed in intensive care and doctors said his condition had deteriorated today (Tuesday) before his death.
Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell has written to the Sevilla president to express Celtic’s condolences to Antonio Puerta’s family and to everyone at Sevilla, devastated at the tragic loss.
Sevilla’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens in Greece, scheduled for tonight, has been postponed.
The thoughts and prayers of the entire Celtic family are with Antonio Puerta’s family and friends at this sad time.
A minute's applause will be held before tomorrow night's game between Celtic and Spartak Moscow as a tribute to Antonio Puerta.
