External Hard Drives...

..Anyone know which is the better brand? Western Digital or Freecom? Am I right in thinking Western Digital?

Was going to get a Seagate but apparently they are ****.

Drew and Chewster - You use External Drives right?

I think they're all much of a muchness, having said that I wouldn't get one of the one's off ebay where an external drive had been place into a convertor kit and sold as an external one.

Just go for the most sturdiest and bulky, and treat then with a lot of care.

I've just bought a 320gb one from pc world (Toshiba). It's made of metal, and feels pretty sturdy, and was only £129.99

I thought i'd lost ALL my tunes yesterday when my laptop decided to die, but luckily i'd got it all on the MP3 player.
 
I think Maxtor and Western Digital are both quite good. I've also not had any problems using an internal drive installed in an external box kit.

Depending on your needs, you also might want to consider getting 2 drives instead of one big one.That way, you can have two copies of any important information (eg. I've got my MP3 collection backed up as well as my huge AVI home video files.)

I just realized that, counting laptops, the desktop and 2 external drives, I've got over a terrabyte of storage at home.

Quite. I was just adding my experiebnces. As I said, I think I was probably just unlucky, though I'll never buy one again.

Lacie is usually good, but there's always the possibility that you have the missfortune to ge the exception that confirms the rule

I've got one too - only problem is it doesn't recognise a certain Mac filename (something to di with the icon for each folder) which makes it really hard to do bulk-transfers. Highly annoying for mac users hope they have put out a fix.. Sylvia?

I use it to store pics and videos, the first massive bulk took Pep ages and he did remember the mother of the designer 8O :lol:
Now as soon as I download pics from the cam I bulk them into the HD and there's not problem

It's a bit strange, tho, cos Lacie it's very common with mac users, isn't it?

Seen a few things saying stay away from Lacie. Packard Bell had a 400gb one for £150 in pcworld!

My techie mate said they are poo though.

Think it will be a western digital badboy.

Strictly for music though Drew :lol:
