events of the last 50 years

Im making a scrapbook for my Mother in laws 50th birthday and hoping catalogue personal events alongside world news events. i was wondering what are the national/world events that stand out most in your mind over your lifetime? i might steal some of your ideas for the book. For her i am definitely including diana and charles wedding as it happened on her birthday and possibly the fall of the berlin wall and the moon landings.

For me the events that stand out are (sadly) the rise of the spice girls, Lady Di's death, ceasefires in Northern Ireland and The famine in Ethiopia. I must not have paid too much attention to the news when i was young because i cant remember alot of the things that my mates can like the berlin wall, assination of the israeli prime minister and live aid. i ws probably watching too many films at the time.

early days is right, who really has any confidence in their politicians? For me things have been relatively stable over my lifetime but for someone of my parents age, well they will have different memories.
 
i can't help thinking that ibiza spotlight's clubbing open chat section is not really the place to garner memories of the last 50 years, given its demographics (sorry morby i'm generalising again) however i really do remember where i was when kennedy was assassinated!

The grass knoll? Although I'm not sure this is the place for confessions!
 
Oh dear.........erm.......... few people had cars, most used buses extensively.......... life often surrounded the Working Mens Clubs......... they even had bus trips to the seaside every year......... the arrival of BBC2 and ITV.......... colour television........ the radio had The Light Program and The Home Service........... John F Kennedy assasination.......... pirate radio the most prominent I can remember was Radio Caroline........ the explosion of Pop music in the media with the arrival of Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc......... TOTPs........ the beginning of concerts by big name bands............. the arrival of Radio One after shutting down the pirate stations.......... Martin Luther King........... Sharpville shootings....... the arrival of Disco......... man landing on the Moon............

9/11 is the biggest single historical event that i think i'll look back on.

the internet/microchip...........other technology developments.

the hoff on the berlin wall

wars - vietnam, gulf I, gulf II, balkans

watergate


pretty grim reading in the main!:? :cry: :?
