Euros what should i do

the actual exchange rate doesn't differ from country to country. you might get a better commision deal, but that's about it.

it was 119 to 120 in playa den bossa the other week.i used my nationwide card and seeing my statments i got 125 and 126 plus a few oddments.any atm machine along the way to alley.there is one just up from fag shop

so card is best really.no commision on it

1.26 at the moment. but you wont get that.

1.20 after commisons etc.

im thinking of cashing some in now, its had a good run over the last fortnight.

definitely rallied a bit over the last few weeks. end of may was the best time but i reckon it might come back a bit more.

it's a joke when you work out how much less spending money and how much more things will cost compared to last year though. and with the fuel surchages... having said that, there's no way you'll get me in a caravan in bognor saving money!

get a rate over 1.21? if so then go for it i say , or open a nationwide account and use your card without charges when you are out there

I just called my bank (Halifax UK) to clarify what the setup is.

1. You need to let them know that you are going as apparently due to the ammount of fraud at the moment if you're card is suddenly being used oversea's they are likley to block it.

2. You need a chip and pin card.

3. Charges = £4.75 (per withdrwl) then whatever the exchange rate is at the time.

From memory - when I went a few years ago you could draw 300 Euro's per day - but this may be based on what type of account you have rather then the machines over there.

its a 300 limit on nationwide card as well.per day from atms but ok for paying hotelbill.so get money out at 1 min to 1am spanish time.then draw out again 1 min past.

no you don;t have to phone them.but if you really what to be safe.ring the number on back of card....waste of time really they say its ok.

say i am not getting anymoney for pushing this card, but its the best around.it only takes about to week to sort it out.ok you dont get interest on it.but you get a far better rate

A word of warning

Just a word about the time it takes to setup this card.

I went in to my local branch (Sat 7th June 2008) and seen a top consultant who was visting my local branch. I said to her I go away on the 18th June will this be all done and back befor I go, she said not problem.

I filled in all the forms etc and gave her my money.
The card came on the 10th June and ONE pin number came on the 11th June.
I gave it until Friday 13th June just to give them time BUT no pin number now this was after reading the letter that came with the card saying that the pin number would follow two day's later.

I then phoned my local branch and said that I had not got my pin number, Oh we are sorry about that it must have got lost. Let me look on your account for you I see that it has been sent to and you should get it by Monday 16th June. Monday came and still no pin number. I then phoned my local branch again to find out what is going. Oh sorry again it must have got lost or stolen I will send you another one, errrrrrrr Just a min if you do that that will make my card invalid won't it? Oh yes I will replace it for you.
If I put it in the post first class to day you will get it tomorrow Tue 17th.
Then she said have you phoned to tell them that you are going to use your card in Spain.
I said no, Oh I would phone them if I was you. So I did and you do not have to phone them BUT BUT I said to her while I was on the phone about my troubles with my pin and she said NO WAY WILL YOU GET YOUR PIN by the next post it takes 5 to 10 days.

So i looks like I have put my money in the nationwide and cannot use my card as we fly Wed 18th morning.

Arrrrr I hear you say you should have done it all early, yes I agree BUT I did not know about this card untill woody said on hear.

Fed up with the dam cards.

Jeez mate sorry about your troubles....on your write up though you mentioned that it actually came with ONE pin number? Cant you just use that same Pin number abroad mate or am i missing something here?

...strange you saying that, i use my halifax debit card abroad a lot and have never yet told them i was going abroad and havnt had any problems....yet!

Are there any Deutsche Bank cashpoints in San An? I know they're big in Spain but can't remember if there are any

They're part of some alliance with Barclays and no fees if I use my Debit card in one of those. I'm heading over in a couple of days (yay), and every little helps ;-)

Hi DjTipster

SORRY did not explain that to well

No cannot use that pin number.

When I went in to setup a FLEXI account they said I had to have a Gold Card credit card as well and that pin number is for that card.

They also said NOT to use that card for cash with draws from atm machines in Spain.

BUT still no pin for the Flexi card.

You would not believe the mess this is all been, this morning I have got a letter come saying thanks for setting up a credit card with us. This is a ANOTHER ONE nothing to do with the first one I setup.

I think I will just stick with the good OLD travel cheques

I will never understand the amount of pain you British go through with regards to banking in general, and traveling as it relates to banking & currency.

I'm living out here in Russia... where the banking system has really only developed in the past decade... and I have no problems taking my regular old debit cards abroad and using them in any country no matter what the local currency. I've been known to land somewhere with only enough rubles for my taxi ride home upon return. I head straight to the nearest ATM in whatever airport, and off I go with a wad of local notes.

I pay 100 rubles per withdrawal (about 2 pounds). The exchange rate is always decent (well, better than at a currency exchange point). And I never have to notify anyone of anything before I travel. I even occasionally get a call from fraud protection to double check if a large purchase was mine before the transaction clears (but after authorization, so no hold ups at the store).

I can't believe that all UK banks are that bad. You guys have got to be doing something wrong!

Agreed.

I have Halifax account that I can always use and a Barclays Business debit card that works too. Plus a Barclaycard too.

I was a little peturbed that Bloomingdales in LA never questioned the fact that my signature has rubbed off my Barclaycard. The strip says void, the chip has fallen out so there's a hole in it and they don't use PIN numbers they couldn't verify it that way. I guess my passport as ID was the clincher though, although they never asked for that when I used it at the airport!
