The thing is, people may think that taking the £50K may be morally wrong (I'd have taken the money too.), but then it could be perceived as being greedy to not take it and hope for the £200K.

But Eugene didnt know that if he turned down the £50,000, the new winning balance would go to £200,000. He thought it would remain at the orginal level of £100,000.

Does anyone think that if he had turned it down and he didnt win on Friday (i.e. someone else won £200,000) that the winner would have given Eugene a few pounds for increasing the prize money?
