goin here for the weekend for my b'day in October, Gonna fly up from gatwick, wheres the best area to stay?? got eye on 3 hotels, apex european, apex city & apex intl? :?

Apex City and Apex International are both next to one-another, in the Grassmarket. Both lovely hotels (I stayed in one when over with work).

If you're in the Grassmarket, you're bang in the middle of everything too.

My advice woud be either the International or the City - the European is further out of the city centre.

The Intl and City hotels are actually straight across the road from each other - good location next to the Grass Market where there are lots of bars etc...

Hope you have a great birthday - are you thinking about going clubbing - if so where abouts?

Definitely the City or International - have never stayed in either but have been to a work conference at the International and it's really nice, and the Metro brasserie in the basement is quite nice too.
They're a really good location - nice and central and easy to get back to on foot after a night out and loads of great places to go out round about (my advice would be to avoid the pubs in the Grassmarket though - full of stag and hen dos)

i stayed at the carlton highland before with my ex. check out laterooms.com, usually good deals there.

although the apex in dundee is superb so i can only assume edinburgh is just as good if not better. looks cool from the outside anyway.

Cheers guys, think the city/intl is the one, not sure about clubbing yet, would like to go to the more "discerning bars", is the grassmarket similar to say "the printworks" in manchester? or "broad st" birmingham? lot's of chain bars? et al??

nah, Grassmarket has a bit more "character", especially down the bottom of it at the "Hairy Triangle" (you'll see !!! :-) )

On the whole, it's pretty much the same as anywhere else. Lots of students, so less of a clubbing city, more 3 Bacardi Breezers and long hair.

just so you can give me "the right" review/advice, theres 4 of us going, made up of 2 couples?? is the "hairy triangle" still a good option? ;)

PMSL  You a regular down the Burke & Hare then :?:  For some reasons the names of the other 2 bars appear to have escaped my mind

As Bella B said, Oloroso is ok, more for a daytime drink on a sunny day then you can get a seat on the roof terrace. But you don't get many sunny days in Edinburgh.

Tonic in Caslte street used to be alright but I aint been there for years. Is it still there :?:

Tonic's still there - can be abit full of officey people some nights though.

There's some nice places for drinks up by the Uni too - which is a really short walk from the Grassmarket.
