I've just got me self a cd re-writer & am now on Broadband.
I'd really like to download things like the Essential Mix & other shows like Annie Nightingale & copy them on to cd.
I'm told that although they are protected by copywrite, there are ways to overcome this.
Can anyone please help?
Please bear in mind that I'm a bit of a novice.

I have just registered for this. Where the hell do you download music from??

The only place you seem to be able to go on the site is the messageboard.

Am I being thick??

click this:
http://www.slsknet.org/slsk152.exe

open it... install it... run it..

press search, type in a song u want... wait... if a list of songs comes up you wanna hope there's one thats in a black font rather than grey. That will mean you wont have to wait to download. If the text is grey you will have to wait in a queue, u can see how long the queue by looking at the column titled 'queue' (funnilly enough!). Once you've chosen the song u wanna get, double click on it. The first time u do this, u will be prompted to choose where to save the files you download. After this, all files will be saved there. CLick on the transfers button to see your current transfer status.

Slsk is pretty damn easy to use. If you have probs with it then read the manual and FAQ. If you still have probs then u seriously arent cut out for the life of downloading!

Audiogalaxy was awesome before it got closed down. I know a friend ;) who used to download loads of the Essential Mixs from there. There was a huge list.

My one point on this issue is please dont use things like Soulseek and download copies of the latest 12" - as essentially this cuts out the label and artist's returns and this will ebetually affect us all for the worse due to the fact a lot of upcoming artists/labels will be unable to produce/release.

everytime i download a song from SS and i think its a good tune ill go out my way to find it on 12"

soulseek is basically like going into a record shop and listening to the record!!

most people who use 12" mix, so an mp3 is no use!

Sorry - but no , it isnt. Your point is valid in that it exposes music to a wider audience but you are one of the minority.

Due to the coming of age of CD decks a lot of people will now simply rip a copy of the latest 12 onto CDR and thats it.

Trust me , I heard it from the horses mouth that this is hurting Dj's and producers.

I dont think anyone can argue that illegally downloading/sharing music is a good thing. It has its benefits but at a major cost. I hate in when websites say stuff like 'the money just goes to those record company fatcats anyway. Its not supporting the artists.' and 'it would be a lot better to buy tickets to see your favorite artist live' etc. Its gets on my tits big time. If everyone downloaded music then the artists wouldnt make any cds you muppets!! So what if the money goes into the record labels pocket? Its a funkin business!!

i could go on for a while bout this but i think i should stop.

I must admit I do download lots of tunes, but I wouldn't buy them anyway, and since I started doing that I have started buying a hell of a lot more albums/compilations, maybe a co-incidence.
However for every person who it encourages to buy more music, I'm sure there are several who just download instead of buying.
