Do we need more techno nights?

ok so you haven't been to cocoon in 5 years. I understand. nowadays it's way less busy and IMO the crowd has improved a lot. of course there are a few artists that aren't very underground, but there are also people like zip and sonja moonear who're definitely not 'commercial' (albeit, they're not very techy, I'll give you that). cocoon as a promoter is of course very popular, it's the island longest running tech night really so not overly surprised at the fact it's popular and people talk about it.

I am pleased that there is a new night with harder techno for the puristst, don't get me wrong. it's definitely rare to see people like surgeon, perc etc on the island and that is nothing but great. then again people like fritz kalkbrenner, josh wink and monika kruse aren't exactly 'proper techno' if you ask me and that's why I said I'll be curious to see the full night by night line ups.

Wasn't talking about everybody just my perspective on the night yes can be very busy as most big nights are on the island depending on the time of the year (when was you visits to cocoon ) around 2010 was when hawtin Carola Luciano villalobos and Co were there non stop and was the go to night of that time now music on and to some extent Solly +1 intec is usually early on in the season when older/switched on people are about as with late season and not as busy as said before the music onyx has offered up is my preferred sound but still think I'll go to cocoon and lose my self in my own little cocoon as I've always done and keep the serious heavy techno for back home got the riverside fest before Ibiza with Gary beck slam klock & rodhad can't wait

Cool joni like you places like the sub club for return to mono) in Glasgow tressor and other techno dens don't compare to the super clubs of Ibiza for that no messing around techno Ibiza is a bit different in terms of vibe and people who go there (tourists) and serious clubbers you expect a mix of people not pure techno heads most of the passengers leave before the best of the night anyway at cocoon and other like minded nights part of Ibiza love or hate it

I love Ibiza, but I love a good railway arch in the uk somewhere edgy as f*** and seedy to enjoy proper techno with like minded people.
Truth is, the glory days are gone on Ibiza it's purely a tourist trap! It's a very enjoyable experience for me none the less but in terms of authentic underground anything Ibiza doesn't offer that vibe. Maybe out of season yes but not the big clubs. Underground was never about glitz and glam when I've been in a dark sweat box meeting randoms off their nut and although Ibiza is Ibiza....the underground scene can still be found if you look in the right place. The two should be separate so we don't saturate that vibe with Ibiza heads

Germany still on the list, their scene from what I've heard is a real treat and polar opposite to Ibiza again. And it thrives, hope I get to sample it one day.

spot on - unfortunately commercial pressures on ibizan promoters to put bums on seats mean it could never have a subclub/tresor now - that and the fact there is such fierce competition from elsewhere in Europe (esp Barcelona/Berlin/Croatia). The only hope is if a smaller specialist club emerged and built up a word of mouth name but it is very difficult in such a transient tourist market. In the meantime, those of us who like the good stuff and have supported the scene for years have to realistically temper expectations. I used to feel more militant about this and maybe it's my age but this summer am treating it more as a social/beach thing although hopef will still hear some good music at Hyte or Detroit Love.

Trouble is these kind of places in the UK are either being forced to adopt harsh policies against their customers or are being shut down completely. (Going by reports, anyway; haven't been clubbing in the UK for ages.) Say what you like about Ibiza becoming more commercial, but it's still pretty liberal.

loads of promoters I know just do parties in more and more imaginative places now - shops, galleries, moored boats, barns, studios you name it. Finding a bona fide venue is very hard in London right now not to mention all the hassle when you do.

In the early 90's raves and dance events would appear in all sorts of venues, sports centres, ice rinks, cinemas, theatres etc.. you just dont see that these days, also I have no idea how these venues used to get early morning licenses, some even 9 or 10am! You just wouldnt see that anymore

You do in Birmingham

Really like the look of the Onyx line-ups (looking like it'll be Ben Sims and Dave Clarke when I'm there) but not sure how busy it will be. Are they planning on just having the one room open?

Two of the best in the business. I'd expect it to be rammed.

Oh, I completely agree and have seen them lots of times. However, given that it's up against Cocoon and a lot of people might not want to do Space two nights in a row, as quite a few people will want to do Carl Cox, I don't know. I'll probably be there though!

yeah the sims/clarke date is definitely one of the strongest in the whole onyx calendar. not sure it'll get rammed, but I would think that it should be busy that one.

it would seem FGP isn't alone in his views on the current state of techno...

this (open access) FB thread is going off right now

HOW TO BE A SUPERSTAR TECHNO DJ

1. Absolutely have no background in techno music.
2. Move to Kreuzburg / Berlin.
3. Make some beats, whatever, as long as it's 4 times 4. You can also choose for a shadow producer with good skills.
4. Make sure to know how to beat match.
5. Hire a big PR agency, pay them 2000,- euro a year. They will do everything to hype up the name. They have all the contacts in their network.
6. Get attracted by a big booking agency, preferably from Berlin.
7. Hold up for 2 years to eventually end up in the RA top 100.
8. You're there now. Good luck!
