Do DJs still use vinyl?

i only use vinyl but its getting harder & harder to find any decent new choons being pressed..... i mean, most of the housey stuff like chicago stuff are still being pressed but its a matter of cost.... if i have 2play a harder gig its virtually impossible for me to buy stuff on vinyl..... there are a few labels left like baroque etc..... but its getting beyond a joke!
i actually have to ask (when booked) if they have turntables because most clubs dont even have them there anymore & its such a shame.....

i hate CDs.... they are **** & disposable & bull**** & i hate them.......
im actually having to make the decision of whether i want to DJ anymore & change format or just retire...... & it sucks.... because mixing CDs is a ****....

& DONT EVEN GET MY STARTED ON FRIKKIN LAPTOP MIXING BULL****......:spank:

A good tune is a good tune no matter what format its on.

i used to hate playing off cdj but you get used to it. Also sitting in my front room downloading tunes means i can have it burnt and mixing it in 5 minutes.

Anyone can learn to mix two tracks together in 20 minutes, so why pay just to see someone do that?

The ability to choose good music and read the crowd makes a good DJ, add something like Ableton and you can be a lot more creative than playing two records. You can make something completely different.

I have had Technics for 19 years and CDJs for 4. You got to move with the times, I still use them all, but mixing with Ableton is ground breaking and I havent been as excited about DJing for years.

All the preparation is done before hand, but you need to commit a lot of time to do it right. It aint as easy as some people make out, but it is the future.

I don't think you can learn to mix .... say two vinyl decks - to a professional standard, two cdj's - read the crowd, understand the music, scratch - use all the knobs on the mixer what ever they do - smoke a giant reefer & drink red stripe - and have the crowd bouncing in a dirty basement room from start to finish.

Thats the kind of DJ skill I like. Enter Theo Parrish.

The ableton, bloke sat there with a laptop thing may well be as technically demanding, but it leave me a bit cold.

yeah but its all minimalzzzzzzZZZZZZz crap...
or whatever-they-are-calling-it techno......

no thanks...:!:

wrong.

a bit like you think cocoon is all about minimal, you've obviously not heard nick curly or cassy play their brand of funky, groovy, jackin house........all on vinyl.

cassy especially almost exclusively uses vinyl.

you might be right but i've never really digged the choonage @ cocoon.....
i havent heard any of nick curly or cassy...... jackin' house? as in chicago stuff a la
da sunlounge or say slater hogan/chuck daniels etc...??? ohhh if so, i will have to suss that ****e out maaaan.......

in regards to cds..... its a HUGE thing for some people (ie, me) 2change format.... like you said " a good choon is a good choon" but my problem is HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET???
ive got stuff in my bag that took me (seriously) 5years to find on vinyl & thats what make/made it so special to drop...... i dunno... maybe im being a silly bitch but i kinda find it offensive that ANYONE can get ANYTHING @ ANY TIME......

(ps. im old & thinking about retiring (& trying to not sound jaded ;))

and what vinyl it is too

I much prefer vinyl as I like to make things hard for myself.

The thrill of stressing about having time to pitch things right, the anxiety of the time it takes rewinding it to the beginning, and the crippling joy of an incorrectly weighted needle as it skips across the platter as it gets knocked by the crowd really gives me that buzz that I think is felt by the audience.

I also like limit what I can play in any given set to around 80 tunes, helps me focus.

I save in gym memberships due the all in one total body workout I can give the lower right side of my back and my shoulder.

And finally, my religious beliefs dictate that looping and hot cues are the stuff of sorcery, and honestly feel that it's the ind of futuristic nonsense that will see the entire scene implode

With Cds?

it can be as you get people just playing really poor quality mp3s back on them.

But then you always got poor quality records being pressed.

I have gone totally digital at home using the digital outs on the CDjs to the digital ins on my mixer and the sound quality is awesome, just as good as my vinyl set up used to be. You just have to know what you are doing with tuning your system

well each time i go to ibiza i nip in a record shop i know in town.and i can tell you vinly is not dead yet.he sells loads.over the years i must of sold well over 300.000 if not more on ebay.i had well over 50.000 myself.vinly junky i was.plus mailing listed helped in those early days.now i am going through my old dj mates collections one at a time.and some of the money they get is unreal. rare promos get the most.

so vinyl is not dead yet

Seems like we have more in common than just hanging around here late at night !!
I'm gradually whittling it down, but it's so painful (but makes room for more)
