Help me out of a predicament ...

One of my younger members of staff is getting hitched tomorrow and have been invited to the reception.

Only thing is i can't imagine anything worse than spending saturday evening in some working man's club with a load pissed up, load mouthed chavs.

However being his boss, i sort of feel obliged.

I need excuses quick!

Blame family commitments but keep your nice boss status by taking him/her down the pub this afternoon...

One of the things I have realised being a manager is that your staff invite you to things like this because they feel they have to, but the reality is they don't want you there any more than you want to be there.

How about you make an excuse, but pop out and get a bottle of bubbly and crack it open at the end of the day today to wish him all the best? ;)

Buy him a bottle of average champagne or a bottle of nice scotch (i'd say JD but you'd drink all that before you gave it to him :P ), make your excuses and wish him luck :D

Drew that is quite arrogant of you :?

I don't think it is necessarily...I'm faced with a similar dilemma.
A bloke I used to work with is having a house party/birthday do on Saturday and he really wants me to pop in. I'd like to go but am also concerned about the prospect of having to spend an evening with a bunch of chavtastic wronguns.

I think definately go for an hour and make sure you have something to do afterwards so you can claim back your weekend!

Missus has to work late tomorrow evening so i suppose i could pop over for a while, it's quite a drive though :(

There again, one of my car tyres was looking a little low this morning, maybe i could let a little more air out

Do you think so? I have a bigproblem with spending time with people I dont want to spend time with (whether they are chav or whatever)

I have come to a point in my life whereby I believe that life is too short to waste time and I dont want to waste any of my "out of work" time on stuff/activities I dont want to do when I hardly have enough time to spend on people I really really want to be with.... might be harsh but its a fact my life at the moment I am afraid.... :?

I don't think i'm being arrogant at all.

I always go out of my way to say 'morning' to the staff and he's one of those that struggles to even reply.

Am with you on this one PL. The stress of going somewhere you don't want to be is a nightmare!

I think the champers is a good idea at the end of the day.

I have to say though Drew, if my boss called me "the staff" we would be having words!

With you on this one PL. I always used to go out my way to be nice to people and do the right thing, even if I didn't particularly like them I'd try and be civil but Tom taught me that life is too short to bother with people who you don't want to spend time with and now I just make an effort with the people who are important to me.

Selfish, moi :?

If you don't wanna go, then don't go. But you might surprise yourself and have a really good time. How do you know they are all loud-mouthed chavs? there might be loads of decent honest people there. End of the day your call, but I don't think it would hurt to turn up for a few pints before making a silly excuse to leave. You won't be the guest of honour so you'll hardly be missed.

Surely you don't want me to sit and here and name them all one by one instead!

Unfortunately some of my 'colleague's ;) prefer to live by the 'them and us' attitude.

Subsequently (some of them) deserve the same kind of respect in return.

Don't get me wrong, i get on with most of them great but there are always a few that you just can't do right for doing wrong

At least i managed to wriggle out of the stag-do last week. They ended up in Spearmint Rhino - just to give you some idea of what i missed out on

Or with strangers pestering you in clubs for example..

;)

That reminds me of a line from the Charley's Angels pic where boss Tim Curry says to Lucy Liu as she is giving him a back massage

'you have such wonderful hands, i should get you on my staff'
