Northern Soul is a culture, a hobby, a lifestyle, and obsession. The all nighter experience the moment you wake up on the fateful day. The first thoughts are always the same,: "How have aI slept?" "How do I feel?" `Damn, it will be twenty four hours before I see my bed again!`
The the firs pangs of excitement creep in .. you try to banish them to the back of your mind and go back to sleep. But it's no good - your mind is already buzzing with the images of packed dancefloors, a headful of songs, and handshaked and hugs with the fellow soul fan you will meet later than night some distance down the motorway.
Work is a godesend - it helps to occupy your mind as the clock ticks towards the fateful hours when you will embark on another all nighter adventure. No work and an empty day without a family means a seemingly interminable wait for darkness. Everyone has their own pre nighter ritual they have honed to perfection over maybe two of three decades: a good workout, a lazy afternoon reading, an attempted tea time nap (usually futile), a few beers, whatever gets you in the mood physically and mentally ...
Checking the right clothes are ready; ringing around to arrange transport, sorting out babysitters, making peace with your loved on who will stay at home awaiting your return at breakfast time. And yes, even riniging around to arrange the dugs to sustain you through the long night ahead. These are, and always have been, part of the essential pre nighter ritual which so many tens of thousands of Northern Soul fans have enjoyed over the last three decades!

"The Rockafellar Skank" came over the airways for the first time ... "Hmm, it sounds like .. no, it can't be! It bloody well is ... it's "Sliced Tomatoes"
Quite how Norman stumbled across an obscure instrumental liked "Sliced Tomatoes" by Just Brothers is as intriguing to Northern Soul fans as how Rubin's "You've been Away" came to used on the Felix cat food adverts on tv.

Whatever you think of Northern Soul .. and there is loads to tell believe me (and I'd willing type out this book as it is such an inspiration), it's a sad day today. Dave Godin, the man who "invented" the term, Northern Soul, has died.
Remembering with loads of fond memories.
