Dance 88/89 Sankeys

1st post on these forums. I was in Ibiza in 88, San Antonio. Stayed in a hotel up past a club called Idea? and Star Club I think? Can't recall the name of the hotel though. Our regular club was Night Life in the centre of San An? First time I heard Acid House music and was blown away. Raved all night and remember stumbling home at 5 in the morning, the "Sun Rising". What a holiday. Got some photo's somewhere which I'll try and load up. Even some video, but I'll have to route around the parents to find that.

Anyway, after 28 years, I am coming back to Ibiza in September staying at the sleepy Es Cana. But, I think I am going to have to check this out at Sankeys. This will be right up my street. What are the options for travel? Is it a daytime event or an all nighter?

Can't wait to see the changes!
its an all nighter mate, right up my street as well, some new stuff is good but to be honest a lot of it generic crap and even young lads i know say that, there has been an upsurge in old skool on the island the last 2 years and long may it continue, you just dont get the same atmosphere at other nights for the most part.

What other nights are 'working' in Sankeys this year? It's the club I probably feel most 'at home' in (and one I stay nearest to), so maybe hit it up at least one more night in the week...

My mate was there last week don't know what night it was but simon dunmore was playing..he likes that head kandi type music:rolleyes:. He said it was packed out

Warriors would be the other night I'd most likely go to. In previous years it's been iffy due to WLS, but maybe less competition this year?

Photos from this week looked pretty sparse. Even at the angle they have used to make it look busy, looks to be about 80-100 people in the lab for the headline set of Fabio / Grooverider and even less for Mr C

Same again for the most recent ones https://www.facebook.com/Dance88.89/photos/?tab=album&album_id=943296062445603

Thought it'd be pretty busy? Anyone else been, any thoughts? Was gonna hit up the closing but if it's this dead might find something else.

just spoke to our writer aimee who's been to d88/89 a few times over the course of the past few weeks. so yeah, as visible on pictures, definitely not packed. it could certainly be busier, but the times she went she says it was busy enough to create vibe - so not completely empty and an up for it crowd.

so...if you want to see sankeys in full swing, do sundays (warriors) instead. but if you like the fact there's room to dance and you want to hear those old tunes, dance88/89 all the way.

These retro nights should be one offs no matter who you have playing.. people want to hear new music.
that's not true mate, I don't and there are many like me, most new dance music is rubbish IMO, some deep and soulful house is pretty good but for the most part it's generic rubbish, tech house being the worst culprit, much of it sounds the same and the atmosphere just isn't there like it as at old skool events.

What people don't realise is that Acid House was the catalyst for the whole dance music scene which subsequently followed, unlike some other styles of dance music from back in the day much of Acid House still sounds amazingly fresh even today , you know this when 20 year old clubbers are saying these tunes are great never heard them before.

And as I mentioned the atmosphere too which is sadly lacking in many of the Ibiza superclubs, for example Italian posers who spend much of the night checking their appearance in the mirror and leering at women @ Music On,etc.etc you didn't see that @ Clockwork Orange which was the party of the summer in Ibiza.

Cant wait for the Dance 88/89 closing party ;)

I agree that a lot of modern dance music is crap (probably 90-95% of all the DJs championed on here, play utter tripe)

but a whole night of classics though - seriously? at what point does it stop being a club and starts becoming a wedding?

if it's a load of ultra rare, one off promo, forgotten Oakey b-sides (from before he went shit) from 89 I missed at the time I would be all over it but that's never gonna happen

I'm cool with 2/3 classics max and even then only very late on in the night to bring you back up

Having spoken to someone who went it wasn't all obvious classics they played, loads of underground stuff got played out, of course your always gonna hear a couple of the obvious classics but you'd like to think DJ's would dig deep into their collections and play lesser known tunage

Sorry but many young people (not all so don't take offence to whoever might start kicking off about my comment) are clueless and don't care what music is played. They will hear some DJ or venue is super cool and go there and they'll have loads of fun dancing, meeting people etc nothing wrong with that .. But you could probably drop a Celine Dion track in the middle of the set if you were a certain DJ (slight exaggeration but you get my point). When I was young people got into good house music way before they went clubbing ... But now it's like you go clubbing and maybe you'll start searching for good mixes on sound cloud etc or maybe you'll still drive in your car playing sh1t RnB.

Depending on who's playing depends on what you hear...

ive been clubbing since mid 90's and never heard promised land played in a proper setting until this night... Big thumbs up from me. Defo not an obvious classics night (albeit promised land is an obvious one)

Looking for some help here from those who have been. If you could only go to one, would you go to Dance 88/89 closing on 28th Sept or Abode closing on 30th?

also, both nights on your dates are having some fierce competition so I don't expect neither of both to be packed.

Cheers. Got Space closing and Sankeys closing week party so just looking for one night in my first week. First time in Sankeys last year and really felt at home there. I'm thinking 88/89. Got in to clubbing early 90's so should be a good blast from the past. But have seen some videos from Abode and looks like they put on a decent night. Also Abode closing only gives me one night to recover properly for Space. Really want to be fresh for that so I can last as long as possible. When the time comes though, I might just do both.
