Cream 07 WITHOUT Paul Oakenfold

I have seen him and I have been to Cream.. however at no time was he the reason for going, so I guess I should qualify my statement with that. I meant to say I avoided him like the plague, but I did have the unfortunate times of being at parties and clubs when he was playing alongside ppl that are good that I went to go see. Everyone says that he was instrumental back in the days for trance and I'm not contesting that. But it's 2007. And he sucks now and has for the last few years. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

sorry i missed your reply. ok it read like you were saying you'd never seen him or never been to cream.

he wasn't jsut instrumental for trance, he was instrumental (to what extent it can be argued) for the whole scene 10 years before his fabled residency at cream.

i 've not seen him for a while but i can't dispute the rest of what you say cos i think he is poop now too.;)

In my eyes, Oakenfold is like house music for dummies. It's what you listen to when you're 18. He was my intro into house, but now I can't stand him.

Then your "eyes" need testing mate - I am still more than happy to stick Oakenfold's GU New York on and still be blown away by that particular CD. Some of sets back in the day have been unbelievable 8)

Couldn't agree more - GU New York, Another World and 2 Years... are still all time classics :D

It's so easy to knock Oakie when half the people who criticise him have probably never seen him more than a couple of times - his pre-Cream and Cream days were legendary, even when he moved onto Home and later I saw he play some blinding sets.

These days he can be very hit and miss (last year I ended up seeing about 8 times and about half were average but the other half had echoes of Oakie of old - Piledriver, Where the Steets have no Name, Street Spirit). He's a big bouffanted monkey who sold out to the Yanks but he'll always have a soft spot to me

Have never been a fan of Oakenfold, although he has done a lot of dance music over the years. I have friends that loved the Courtyard residency, but for me I always thought he was hugely over-rated.

A lot of his remix work sounded as though it was taken from a "Perfecto" template. I know lots of people have a sound, but over years and years?

I watched him DJ at a Renaissance party in his Perfecto room and was stunned to see just how simple his mixing style is and that technically he wasn't anywhere up there with the best. That kind of finished him for me.

There are much better and fresher DJs out there to take just a small chunk of his huge fees, and I think more deserving of the money.

i thought new york was sh!t. especially compared to oslo.

naturally, resident is the truest reflection of the courtyard sets and therefore wins hands down.

Oslo is still excellent - Great D&B start to it and its a definite contender, but I have a special spot for New York - just some amazing memories from 98 and I get such a buzz from listening to it... Always comes to Ibiza with me every year - so I can have a "moment"...8)

maybe sh!t was the wrong word. for me, just not as good as oslo or resident.

everyone has their special tunes/tracks/albums..........."if everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other";) :D

He could be playing for Gatecrasher at Eden now.. ;)

Oakie will always have a soft spot for me he was my idol when I was a young pup, and have seen him play amazing "Im never gonna hear a better set than this" sets. But on the other hand last time i Saw him he was rubbish, so I can see why the kids are not getting the attraction to him.

As for his mixing style being simple, as long as the music is good it doesnt really matter how you mix it. Tune selection is 90% of Djing.

And I agree with Grego that Resident is the best!!!!!

Talking of the Monkey Man, I bought Tom this yesterday

It basically follows him around for 12 months, it even follows him to Stamford Bridge at which point Tom came in his pants at the thought of the winning combination of Oakie and Stamford Bridge

The time for me when I decided he had lost it was when he played in Sugarshack in Middlesbrough years ago - he was in the DJ booth with 2 huuge minders and some guy was trying to take a photo. The minder then took out a proper professionally made sign (with hooks and everything) which said "No Photographs to be Taken" and hung it from the booth ceiling - basically cutting off the view of his head and neck - Got to see his Monkey Arms tho.....

Hernan Cantteneo played first and wiped the floor with him, he stood and had photos taken, mingled with the public and drank at the bar just like everyone else. - I just thought Oakie - you nob!!!

Oh it got better - I almost pee'd my catsuit at one point....

Sugarshack is an old cinema so the stage area where the screen used to be is a bit of a podium.

This night there was about 20 punters facing the dj booth on this "stage come podium area" and they seemed to have this strange piece of paraphanelia with them and we are thinking what the hell are they doing - it turns out some "fan" has a roll of woodchip wallpaper and him and his friends are unravelling it between about 20 of them and they have painted on it

"..... And on the 8th day - God gave us Paul Oakenfold...."

to which Oakie lifted his arms and nodded to his minions as if to say "you got that right"..... I nearly choked on my mitzi.....

It goes down as one of those classic moments in clubbing history!!!

I was impressed with the banner, it has to be said - all them hours of scribbling with crayons - that's dedication to the Oakmeister by anyone's standards.....bless!!!!
