Crazy car hire prices

A month ago (wish) was looking at pre-booking my car hire for July. I searched yesterday and the prices have gone up 30/40%!!!

Is this just a blip or are they likely to hold or even get more expensive? I did notice the £ was a bit weaker against the Euro but even the quotes in Euros have risen.

Should I wait or just bite the bullet at the increase?

Just book something you can pay on arrival and cancel without charge. If a cheap deal comes up later happy days, else at least you have something that isn't running into 60-100Euro a day territory.

^^ Kimajy is king of carhire. Also the golden rule is the cheapest deal often doesnt end up being the cheapest / best in the long run with the fuel policies as im sure you know

Yeah man, I'm fairly clued up on it all. Just a bit miffed that in such a short space of time, the price had gone up so much. All my quotes are airport full to full steering clear of the Cowboys.
I like to book most things in advance unlike kimajy who is a last minute merchant

Last Sept/Oct I paid about half of what I paid in previous years. Under 10 eur a day for an economy car! Crazy cheap.

friends arrived on saturday and had to wait ca. 3 hours for their rentalcar in silly heat on a fckng parkinglot . to make things worse the machine where you have to draw a waitingnumber was broken so the start of their holiday was pure chaos.o_O

btw it was that rentalcarcompany which is sponsoring the range rover of that bitch with that "diamondsandfoam"party :spank:

Some of those companies are a disaster, had similar experience with Goldcar in Menorca a few years ago. Prices were down this year though. Only cost me £120 for 4 days in late July and about the same for 3 in Menorca across turn of July/August. About 10 Euros a day for an upgrade to Qashqai / Juke at the desk. Last year prices had soared to 100 Euros a day for late bookings which was enough to stop me going in peak Season at all.

Goldcar are a complete pisstake. They charged me for a full tank in Portugal and when I was driving away from the airport I noticed it was only half full!

I always wonder how full these so called "full" tanks are?

Aye it was a bit of a mission. Also i paid for extra insurance with the website i booked through but the guy wouldnt let me drive the car away unless i put £1000 block on my card (which only had an 850 limit) or pay their own fully comp. And given that my only alternative would have been a bus into faro then along to albufeira at 9pm i just ended up paying the extra for fully comp which is probably why i wasnt payig attention when i drove the car away. Only noticed as i was arriving in albufeira and quickly got out and took time and date stamped photos of the fuel gage. Got a partial refund but they were very difficult about it so would never go with that company again.

there is a lot of whining this year at the rentalcarcounters when people don´t get their car because not enough money on their creditcard for the deposit ...
some people just should read the fine print !

Agreed. Ive been looking at cars for next year as the company Ive used for 2 years have increased prices by 50%. Their deposit was usually around €1050. But some of the news ones Ive been looking at want €1600 and some have two amounts; one for damage and one for theft! Crazy.

I get your point icey, but tone it down a bit.

1600 ? do you want to rent the new bentley bentayga or the rolls royce dawn ? :D

Ha. You would think, but no this is for a "compact" so Focus, Astra, C'eed etc. The two seperate amounts for damage and theft is one of the more ridiculous bits of small print I've seen regarding rental.

1600 is pretty steep. It was 950 at Atesa. Wind up taking a credit card with a hefty limit purely for excess authorizations. When you add the boats to the cars it can run into thousands especially if you've been away somewhere else recently. The authorizations can take a while to drop off your card too.

Or go to Hiper, pay the fee with your credit card and don't have anything blocked on your credit card.

Agreed, they should. As i do. There was nothing in my portugal booking about any of that but standing at the desk in faro airport i had few options than just to pay. Anyway, goldcar - avoid.
