Eeek - just heard on the radio that council tax is set to rise by 5% (twice the rate of inflation!).

Does this mean I'll be paying over £95 a month for the privilege of living alone in London??? Jesus! 8O

Don't talk to me about council tax.

Ours will also be £150/month next year + our service charge goes up 25% to £200/month too.

Annoying thing is we pay for our lighting, bins emptying by non-council companies so basically we're paying for everything twice!

Council tax is expected to rise about 4.5% - 5%

Panic not!

Robder just needs to listen to the radio better!!

All councils have kept it under 5% because of the threat of capping by central government. It means an extra £50-£60 per year on a Band D property.

I can't get my head around how you thought 'twice the rate of inflation = 50%'.

can i please have a pay rise at the rate of inflation? yes sure, have a 25% increase!! :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I'm a bit fuzzy this morning with a hangover, juggling telephone calls an text messages having just found out my best friend is pregnant. (8O :D)

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

big story about it in the local paper like its the best thing to ever happen!

Not so lucky for us. We've been paying a council's guestimated charge up until now as our development is a conversion. But they are due to rate our properties properly soon and have been warned it will go up a lot.

Thats very unusual. The appartment should have been rated before you purchased it. Normally, any change in rateable value (i.e. by construction/extension) is only appied when the property is sold/changes ownership.

Drew - because I've heard nothing further from you i'll assume i responded to you sufficiently yesterday! :lol:

Sorry, i meant to reply but all hell broke loose here yesterday afternoon so didn't have time.

Our apartment wasn't an apartment before so wasn't rated as such. They used a 1992 valuation for a property of similar value.
 
You're all extremely lucky. In Glasgow, council tax seems to be more than in London. The week I graduated, I was sent a letter requesting £150 a month for a 1-bedroom flat in Partick, Glasgow. It's a complete joke. My parents who live in a detached house in Edinburgh pay almost the same amount.

It should definitely be based on earnings.

I can see where you're coming from, but if everything was based on earnings there'd be little incentive to want to do well (financially).

But there again, i am a capitalist pigdog :lol:
 
Yes there is! It's hugely unfair to tax people who cannot afford it. Although the reason why it's so high in Glasgow is due to the enormous number of people on benefit.
