..... why we drag a pine tree into our homes and throw lights and stuff on it.

No logical reason springs to mind.

Who knows :?:

"Perhaps the second biggest phenomena of the holiday season is the Christmas tree. This tradition dates back to the days of the Egyptians, Romans, and Druids. On the shortest day of December, the Egyptians would bring green palms into their homes. This was to symbolize life's triumph over death. The Romans would also adorn their house with evergreens during Saturnalia. This was a festival in honor of their god of agriculture, Saturnus. The Druids decorated an oak tree with golden apples and during the middle ages, the paradise tree was a evergreen decorated with red apples. This was done on December 24th, which was the feast of Adam and Eve. Approaching more modern times, in the 16th Century, the first Christmas tree (as we know it) came into existence. In Strasbourg, Germany, the evergreen trees were decorated with colored paper, fruits, and sweets. It is during this time period that we attribute the first Christmas tree "lot," where trees were sold. It is said that older women would sell the trees that were harvested from the local forests. The tradition of the Christmas tree and "lot" were brought to America by the first German settlers and the Hessian mercenaries, paid to fight in the Revolutionary War. The first American Christmas tree "lot" was set up in New York. In 1851 trees were hauled from the Catskills and brought to the cities, where they were sold during the holiday season."

To me now i think its about selling a product.

dont really think it is about selling a product because christmas trees have been around for longer than ruthless companies like Tescos etc and also they are still sold by 'amateurs'

Awww I love putting the tree up. It's a family "moment" ..... gets brought down from the loft .. takes about 40minutes (at least) to get to look right .. THEN, we open the box of decorations! These date back to when I was a little girl (some 10 years - err, or so!) ... and opening each box, or unwrapping each figure, is a memory worth a huge smile !

I wanted a real one this year but Mike pffff'd and ffff'd ... because I've been ill he brought me on though .. but it's only allowed outside the front door covered in little red lights .... HOWEVER, I have found a way of bringing some in by draping it along the mantelpiece! ;) (So we'll still ge some of the piney smell that is to nice on Christmas morning)

I've been really excited by Christmas this year, as its my first since leaving home. I went to America in May and October, and every store I went into was selling christmas decorations.

They all looked hand made, things like snowmen, santas, gingerbread men and look very different to the normal ones you would find over here in our shops, so I stocked up.

They all look gorgeous on my new tree (fake - don't like the little pine needles) and to top it all off i dried out some orange slice's, put some bow's through them and again, they are hanging from my tree.

I love putting up my tree because it gets me in the festive mood. I love sitting in my living room, watchin tv/listening to music and having my little coloured lights twinkling away!

Ahhh, me too Caroline ... and I can't be doing with plain lights, they've gotta be multi coloured for me !

We appriciate our gorgeous tree's Saffy, but bah humbug to drew and andi!

No, i wasn't suggesting i had anything against it.

Just seems such a strange tradition when you stop and think about it.

:)

actually Drew, i think that the custom of bringing an evergreen plant into your house in the middle of winter is a bit self evident innit
