I've always thought Drew is a gay, jjinit is a scouser and grego is mexican.

So you thought all my posts saying g/f, missus etc was a cover up?

Oh and my obsession with Miss Jolie?

Oh please god not that!

Though that reminds me... I saw an interesting article in (of all places) the Sun today.

Apparently doctors in the UK were upset because Tiger Woods said he was putting "like a spaz" at the Masters. In the US, that's pretty common language you grow up using (though I think I left the phrase back in high school ) and I've never associated it with any illness or disability.

But apparently UK care workers took offense because they call cerebal palsy, "spastic cerebal palsy" and "spaz" is some kind of derogatory reference to it. :?

It is an offensive word morb, it's like calling someone a mong or retard.

it's regarded as an offensive term in the UK for sure. spastic was never a nice name for people with cerebal palsy and it became more and more common as a 'playground' insult.

It's also the reason they changed the name of the spastic society to scope...

Kind of like when they had that programme on years ago with Joey Deacon to raise awareness.

Loads of kids ended up using the word Joey in the playground as a derogatory term...

More details here... http://www.spleen.dsl.pipex.com/joey.html on second thoughts this sites not exactly nice but sums it up pretty well...

That's what I'm saying... in the States, it's not taken as such by the vast majority of people. If you calld someone a "retard", however, it'd be considered offensive. "Mong" is a word I've never even heard of (I assume it's from mongoloid?)

It's like the word "fag" which you use for cigarettes and which in the US is a derogatory word for gays (though nowadays it seems not so insulting as when I was growing up).

yesh in Canada too, people often say 'don't have a spaz' (although they are usually under 14!) if someone over reacts..

calling anyone a retard is rude... but spaz is just slang

i don't understand why it's not seen as derogatory in the states, it's obvious what it's the abbreviation of! it's every bit as horrible as retard.

fag is a horrible word (imo) and derogatory here too, but there it's becoming more common for gays here to call themselves/each other fags a bit like it's ok for black guys to call each other nigger!

Divergent evolution of the language, I guess. I never associated spaz or spastic with a medical condition (perhaps because that's not common usage over there?) I guess the Sun article surprised me because Woods used the phrase in the States, not in the UK. If the word is accepted language (for whatever reason) in the place where it was said, why make a fuss?

I also don't understand for the life of my why gays and blacks have taken to using these slangs with each other... "taking back the word" and all that? Pretty stupid IMH(but correct)O. If you don't want other people calling you something, don't call each other that!

(sorry mikkak... we've gone way off topic )

It's funny that Tiger Woods, who went to uni at Stanford, wouldn't have a better word to describe his putting on Sunday. He could have said that he choked or something.

^^^ agreed.. I don't think 'spaz' should be uttered by anyone over the age of 10

its just growing up hearing

"You're a retard" sounds much worse to me than "you're a spaz'

conditioning , I guess..

yes sorry for the hijack

I'll guarantee that Mikkak is definitely all girl, as I had a fantastic night out with her and her two sisters last November! All three are the beautiful people of the Balearics. :D
