Confederations Cup

Philly starts play next season, right JB?

Seattle are the new boys this year... Chelsea FC are going out to play them in a friendly next month.

I almost wish US players like Landon Donovan would abandon the MLS and come play in Europe, but only if some decent European players went the other way instead of players in their mid-30s!

Landon donovan was on loan at bayern munich last season. He obviously couldn't cut it.

one i mentioned to you when we signed him John
Maurice Edu

after a sticky start settling in, he really drove us to the title
excellent player, v.young too
can see him being a USA regular soon

USA 2 - Brazil 3 :(

Well, not a surprising loss to the Brazilians in the final. But we played a great first half to go in 2-0 at the break.

Tim Howard had another amazing match to keep the Brazilians from scoring more. He did, however, rather cheekily save one goal from behind the line  Another shout for goal line technology??

That was a great final, and it was fantastic to see the USA setting he game up nicely! We were cheering them on the whole way (underdogs and all that).

Surprisingly good tournament actually. Fair play to all the teams for giving it some and SA for showing they can host a football tourny before next year, but damn me, those horns are annoying!

Really? They sound pretty cool. Kinda like a swarm of bees. But then again there is a difference between watching on TV vs. watching it live or playing on the field.

Lol, I thought it was funny when the camera panned through the crowd and some guy or girl would be sitting looking pretty pissed off while a whole host of people were blowing manically on the horns in their ears.

Good luck not blowing up if you do go Morbyd! (Mind you Northern Ireland can still qualify... :D)

Thanks!

It's a real dilemma, actually... I want to see the motherland play, but I've also got some allegiance to my current home (assuming they qualify... in Guus we trust!) and a bunch of my favorite players are England so choosing a home base city and which tickets to buy is a dilemma. Going for the knock-out stage is the other option but the US and Russia might not make it that far so that kills some of the fun too

We're going too.. can't wait. 8)

Not looking forward to driving through red lights after 10 pm in some cities like Jo'burg 8O.
I've heard loads of cities will be struggling to accommodate all the fans too. How long will you be going for do you think?

Hope Spain are based in Cape Town... sun, sea and beach ;)

I want to go for 2 week but we'll see.

I've been to Joburg before and had a great time. We've got some friends who moved down there a couple years ago with whom we can stay so I kind of hope to be based there or Durban where they have a 2nd home (save money!), even though Cape Town would be nicer.

What's your plan?

Well Tamsyn wanted a long haul beach holiday in 2010, and i suggested Africa has lovely beaches.. and there just happens to be a World Cup there too ;)

So basically we want to go to Kenya before the tournament starts as it's on the way, so we'll be there for 7 days.
Then the plan is to see Spain's first 2 group games, whenever they are.
They'll probably be about 6 days apart, so i'm guessing we'll be in S Africa for 8 or 9 days.

There's a group of us going to SA. Can't wait.

Might ask you for advise on where to avoid in Joburg or Durban if Spain play there. The crime stats that are leaking through here are very scary

I think they get exaggerated to some degree. I felt fine in downtown Joburg and I was usually driving around with 4 Russian (ie white) colleagues

We went on a tour to Soweto and as we passed by downtown, our guide told us that the CCTV cameras installed around town had reduced crime by 75%.
