Ah well what a shame for all you doubters and haters....

She has achieved, experienced, endured, conqured and overcome more in the last 71 days than any of you ever have or will in your entire lives.

A BBC poll of over 43,000 people has shown that the majority think she is the greatest British sportswoman ever.

Nonsense - there's no way you can make that statement.

I thought Kelly Holmes was the greatest sportswoman - ah no, that was last week.

Yes there is, and i did, and its true. Its now the majority of 60,000 people on the BBC poll who think she's Britians greatest ever sportswoman...

everyone i've spoke to about her is fed up of hearing about her already.

it's not a popular sport is it, so I'd imagine a large % of the 60,000 voters have an interest in sailing. people who don't care for the sport don't really care about her record IMO

Popular? ~3 million people regularly go sailing or yachting in the UK.....what would be popular then? :?

Sorry,i'm wrong, it's 2.5 million.

From the Royal Yachting association.

I think it is a great achievement, but I do find it difficult to get excited about.
I would say that spending 70 odd days by yourself on a boat and not being able to sleep for more than an hour at a time due to icebergs and whales is something that only a few people could do. The next record is going to be sailing round the world on a unmanned yacht :D

N8 loves her. He's bring ing her to the next So.. event as his burd...

I think a lot of the fuss is down to the British romantic perception of us being a nation of sailors, and it allows the public to wallow in ruling the waves again.

Never win the America's Cup though do we?

Rule Brittania, for Brittania rules the waves ;)

What i dont't understand is why other than the people that do go yachting/sailing there are so few people who seem to be interested in the sport?

Especially considering that the UK is a small island that is surrounded by water, and has a fair few lakes/rivers etc, and the greatest maritime/sailing history of any country in the world... :?

Sailing is too inaccessible for the average Brit. How many people own a boat?

Plus it's boring.

Plus the weather is sht.

My Father in law owns a boat. Unless it's a nice day its an ordeal.

Sailing is far from boring! As Nitefly says, its a massive rush when you get things right and it all goes to plan :D

Its not too expensive to hire a boat/join a club/team.

BUT...........WEATHER   Shit UK weather is definately the main drawback :(

Who do you think you are? the A Team ?

;)

Okay okay, you've convinced me I'll going down the river with me two barrels lashed together with rope tonight. I better not catch a cold though.

Well, when one of your buddies won't go on no damn plane (fool) you have to look at alternative transport methods  ;)
