Clubber murdered outside DC10 26.8.06

there's a story in today's ddi about an illegal taxi driver who assaulted his passenger in an attempt to rob him. could this be a reason?

Exactly. Why would an (illegal) taxi driver bother to start a fight with the guy for "no" reason?

And then think that it doesn't sound like a comprehensive beating, just a horreddously unfortunate knock

Believe this: last Monday (the 4th) I stepped straight out from DC10 and into a free taxi that wasn't pre-booked. I was very surprised myself!

again from one of our local papers the other day. the guy who allegedly dealt the blow to the neck (or throat, not sure how to translate it) said it was with the palm of his hand ie a bit of a slap. i don't think the words horrendous beating have been used anywhere to describe what happened and i reckon that an unfortunate accident during a scuffle is the most likely cause.

on the subject of our duties to our readers i really don't think we have any responsibility to spell out to a load of sophisticated 20 or 30 somethings not to get into a confined moving space with a total stranger either as a paying passenger or hitch-hiker. common sense surely dictates that.

if you need a taxi from dc10 why not ring for one? there is a radio taxi service and in the middle of the day they can't be that busy?

Good point. I'm not expert in Spanish law, but it sounds like it could be manslaughter.

Horrible either way. I neglected to express my condolences earlier, my apologies.

Re: taxis, from Dc10 I've taken one illegal and three legal this year, at varying times of the day.

:o :o

Sorry, but we tried virtually every day last week to get a taxi to come pick us up from our villa, to no avail - i can imagine it being 100 times harder getting one to come to the islands most notorious fcukhead club, in the middle of nowhere.....

The taxi situation on the island is a joke, its no wonder people rely on these chancers. There's obviosuly more to this incident than meets the eye. Those guys are there to make money they're not going to murder customers just for the craic...

Common sense dictates people not to hitchhike? Where is the "sophisticated" planet you are from? As far as I know hitch-hiking is a pretty common practise among young people in Europe and most of us have done it at some point in their lives.

Also, your statement about "getting into confined moving space with a total stranger surely not being common sense" applies perfectly to taking any taxi or catching a bus (unless you happen to know the driver, which is very rare), which everyone does all the time quite happily.

So in conclusion your statement is plain wrong.

Laughable nonsense. Can someone else see to this one please.

What the **** are you talking about?! If you're in a villa (which is not easy to find for a taxidriver most of the times except when it's situated near the -big- towns) you can't get a taxi. Everyone knows that. And if you're renting a villa you don't rent a car??? That sounds pretty stupid to me. Plus, DC10 is'nt in the middle of nowhere. It's just 10 (or 5) minutes away from Playa d'en Bossa. Which a central place and meeting point on Ibiza as you probably know.

Possibly laying myself open to accusations of hypocrisy, here's some quotes from Skrufff's follow up:

Taxi Touts Arrested In Ibiza Street Killing

Cops in Ibiza have charged three Spanish men in connection with the death of English clubber William Hall, 22, who died a fortnight ago after being attacked outside DC10 nightclub.

DC10 chief Andrea Pelino told Skrufff this week the attack happened several hours after DC10 had shut, though had been partially witnessed by one of the club's cleaning staff.

"Two English guys who had been in the club were walking along the Salinas road, hours after the club had finished and I understand stopped a car with some Spanish guys and said 'hey, can you bring us to Ibiza'," said Andrea.

"The guys said OK, you can jump in the car' then when the English jumped in the car they said 'hey what are you doing, get out' and punched him in the face two or three times. The Spanish guys weren't in DC10 they were illegal taxi drivers who drive round the island," he added.

Apologies, i wasn't aware of this "rent a villa, can't get a taxi" rule.

Yes, we rented cars, however sometimes we like to drink when we go out

Thanks for the info on Playa d'en Bossa, i'll be sure to check it out to meet some cool people next year.

My apologies too, now that I read my reply again it sounds a bit agressive and not very nice. Excuse my bad-mouthing!
But as you say, people wanna drink so you gotta get a cab. And about the villa thing, the reason why taxi's rarely go directly to your villa is because of the fact that most of the houses are very, very, very hard to find. The streets have no names of course. You can get yourself dropped off at a km-sign (i.e KM5 to Santa Eulalia) but then you'd probably still have to walk a fair distance which is not very safe at night in Ibiza :D 8O 8O :D

I received help from two 'illegal taxis', one going to Amnesia and one coming back...

I'd met two girls at Bar M and the three of us got a lift to Cream for about 20 euros, but he was English and doing a bit of part time money making...so he was safe enough.

Going home, we were in the v.long queue outside amnesia and we were being approached by various people, and after ten minutes we just gave in, haggled with the argentinian driver over a few euros and got him to drive us back to the egg..nice guy too.

So, i'd say be careful of who's car you get into, make sure there's at least two of you and aslong as the driver only wants to make money you should be okay.

Not to worry mate... for the record we stayed at a villa directly behind KM5 bar/restaurant, so we were asking the taxi's to come to KM5. In the end the only time we did actually manage to get one was during KM5 opening hours and just walked down and the staff there got us one sorted.

i don't really agree with that advice. a licensed taxi, which may be more difficult to come by, is stringently checked for mechanical soundness and is also insured for fee paying passengers.

I absolutley agree!! When you get involved in an accident you have no insurance at all. And the changes of getting involved in a accident are much bigger when sitting in an illegal taxi. Those people are often freakin' 8O 8O 8O
Not the taxi drivers to be with I would say!!!
