Christopher Columbus Was An Ibicenco.
Well known local reporter & historical investigador, Nito Verdera has just released a second part to his theory that Christopher Columbus was actually from the island of Ibiza. In this latest addition to his theory, Nito has used newly discovered maps & illustrations which seem to prove that Columbus new about America before he set off in search of the new land. In fact Noito claims he has proof that the Egyptians, Phoenicians & even the Chinese were at least in South America well before the time of Jesus Christ. Those interested in finding more about Christopher Columbus & why he could actually have been from Ibiza should check out Nito's great web site at www.cristobalcolondeibiza.com

apparently the reason the egg is there is because to prove a point Columbus said he could stand an egg on its base. Everyone said it couldnt be done, so he hit the bottom so it was dented then stood it on straight up.

Not sure how true that is or where i heard it. Anyone shed any light :?

Its the common theory on what the egg is all about, that explanation is featured on spotlight and in the rough guide to ibiza & formentera.

Nito's theory on why the egg is there differs slightly from Iain's explanation in the rough guide...

Nito: “Among the festivities organised in Columbus’s honour by the court grandees on his return after his first voyage, there was a banquet offered by Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza. The Admiral was the guest of honour and during the course of the meal one of the grandees said that if Columbus had not discovered the New World, there would have been many other talented men ready and able to do the very same thing. Then Columbus picked up an egg and asked if any of those present was capable of making it stand on end unsuported. No one was able to do it, but Columbus, by hitting the ends of the egg and flattening them, managed to make it stand on the table without falling over”.

Iain: "The origins of the sculpture's unusual shape lie with Columbus himself. The story goes that, when ridiculed for suggesting there was a westerly route to the indies, Columbus countered by saying he could also make an egg stand upright. Challenged, he promptly cracked the base of an egg and placed it on a table."

The Egg is the best known landmark in San Antonio, commonly used as a meeting place by groups who have become separated.

The Egg is a statue erected in the early 1990s to commemorate the local claim of having been the birth place of Christopher Columbus. The statue is in the shape of an egg, containing at its centre a model of a 15th century ship.

The choice of an egg comes from a story about Columbus who, when ridiculed over his claim that he could find a western route to the Indies, claimed that he could make an egg stand upright, which he did by cracking the base of the egg.
