Manchester United 7 - 1 Roma 8O8O:lol: what an amazing performance they absolutely destroyed Roma, a vintage United performance i don't think anyone would've predicted a scoreline like that, that boy Ronaldo is the best player in the world without any doubt he is an absolute joy to watch, so that's United through to the semi finals as are Chelsea after an excellent away win over Valencia, i honestly didn't give them much chance over there but credit it's due they done well.

Can't see Liverpool slipping up on Wed nite so that's 3 English clubs in the semi finals but after tonite my money is on Man United to win it. my mate was @ the game tonite in Manchester, already he is talking about golng to the final in Athens.:D:D:D

Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring United's third goal

A scintillating display by Manchester United saw them tear Roma apart to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Michael Carrick curled in United's opener and Alan Smith fired home before Wayne Rooney added their third of the night, finishing off a superb move.
Cristiano Ronaldo fired into the bottom corner and slid home a Ryan Giggs cross before Carrick smashed home a sixth.
Roma replied through Daniele De Rossi before Patrice Evra's low shot rounded off United's amazing 8-3 aggregate win.
There have been many memorable performances at Old Trafford down the years but few can compare to the display Sir Alex Ferguson's men put on here.
The scuffles outside the ground before kick-off were quickly forgotten once the game got underway, with United looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg.
Both sides showed attacking intentions in the opening minutes with Roma's Francesco Totti going closest with a fierce shot that fizzed past Edwin van der Sar's right-hand post.
But it was United who grabbed control of the tie with three goals in eight first-half minutes.
Carrick opened the scoring on 11 minutes when he picked up the ball from Ronaldo and bent the ball past a statuesque Doni.
Six minutes later it was 2-0 when Gabriel Heinze and Giggs combined before the Welshman flighted a perfect pass into the path of Smith, who finished with aplomb.
Rooney got in on the act soon after, timing his run superbly to slot home Giggs' low cross after the Italian side had been completely torn apart down the right flank.
A shell-shocked Roma side tried to respond and did go close when Phillipe Mexes headed a David Pizarro's free-kick wide.
But the visitors' attempts to find a way back into the game only succeeded in leaving themselves more vulnerable to United's pacey attack.
Carrick went close when he headed a Giggs corner at Doni but could not react quickly enough when the ball bounced straight back at him.
Ronaldo did make it 4-0 before half-time with a precise finish into the bottom corner after the Roma defence had made the mistake of inviting him to shoot.
United were quite simply superb, and they did not let up after the break either.
Ronaldo, who was in sublime form, slid home a low Giggs' cross before Carrick's piledriver made it 6-0 on the hour mark.
Roma did get one goal back through de Rossi's neat finish on the turn but the game was long since up for the Italian side.
It was exhibition stuff for Ferguson's side by the end and they got the final word they richly deserved when Evra's low shot beat Doni.
Like United's first six goals it was a fine finish, and completed a magnificent victory for United, who will play either AC Milan or Bayern Munich in the last-four.

Shevchenko tapped in to level the tie in the Mestalla

Michael Essien scored in the last minute to book Chelsea's place in the Champions League semi-finals and break Valencia's hearts in the Mestalla.

Essien's angled drive beat Santiago Canizares at his near post, a disaster for the keeper who had just made a wonder save to deny Michael Ballack.
Valencia took the lead when Joaquin crossed for Fernando Morientes to slide in, just after Morientes hit a post.
Andriy Shevchenko levelled from close range before Essien won it late on.

Interview: Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho
Chelsea's incredible comeback looks likely to set up an all-English last-four tie with Liverpool, presuming they finish the job against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
It was a stunning climax to an absorbing contest and Chelsea deserved their reward for a second-half display full of guts and determination.
Valencia made the better start to the game, but having failed to snatch an early goal they looked happy to sit back and soak up Chelsea pressure.
The visitors had chances early on, as Ricardo Carvalho and Shevchenko both nodded wide and Ballack's powerful header was saved by Canizares.
Valencia were not threatening at all. But as the clock ticked around to the half-hour mark, they suddenly came to the party.
David Villa exploded into life and surged at the Chelsea defence, playing in Morientes, who saw his thunderous left-foot strike cannon back off the post from 20 yards.
Moments later, Valencia led. Joaquin crossed from the right and the Chelsea defence uncharacteristically went missing, Morientes sneaking in at the far post to half-volley home from six yards.
Drogba nearly levelled soon after, the Ivorian's flashing header superbly clawed away from the top corner by the 37-year-old Canizares.

Morientes wheels away after his first-half strike

Chelsea needed a response straight after half-time and Jose Mourinho walked down the tunnel before the first period had ended to gather his thoughts ahead of a crucial 15 minutes in their season.
Yet again, the Portuguese master-manager worked the oracle, as the Blues hauled themselves level just seven minutes after the restart.
It was scrappy, but they all count. An Essien free-kick fell to Drogba and as Roberto Ayala could only divert his shot into Shevchenko's path, the striker slammed in from two yards.
Suddenly it was the travelling Blues fans who were in full voice as the partizan home crowd were instantly silenced.
On the pitch, Chelsea sensed blood. One more goal and Valencia would need two, and Drogba forced Canizares to save low to his left from a quick counter-attack.
It was turning into a classic European tie, as Shevchenko crashed one wide and Miguel Angel Angulo fired over as the two heavyweights traded blows.
With five minutes to go, Canizares made one of the greatest saves you could ever wish to see.
Ballack's bullet header from Frank Lampard's free-kick was destined for the bottom corner, only for the keeper to get down to his left and somehow not only save it with his left hand, but get it up and over the crossbar.
But the bleach-blond custodian dramatically went from hero to villain in the dying stages as he left a crucial gap at his near post for Essien to rifle in a winner.

What complete and utter nonsense as usual so the scum beat roma so that means they are immediately going to just sweep aside either 6 times winners AC Milan or the 4 times winners Bayern Munich in the semi final? Love the fact also that you immediately write off Liverpool (5 times winners) and Chelsea (premiership champions) too!!!! We'll see is all I would say...anything can happen and probably will! Valencia's keeper could of covered his near post abit better? Liverpool 'could' be overturned tonight? I hope not obviously but Who knows? I hate brash ill-founded predictions! Well done (through gritted teeth) Man U and Well done Chelsea!

what was interesting about the united game last night and underlines how narrow the gap between success and failure is, was that united only really created as many chances as they normally do in most games.

the roma defence was all over the place after the first one went in and didn't know what hit it in that 7 min spell. at least 3 of the goals were little more than speculative efforts, 4 of the goals were scored in off the post or right in the corner of the goal.......we're talking millimetres here.

all this goes to show that you can forget how well a team plays (some obvious exceptions), they are usually judged purely on goals scored. i didn't think united's performance was that much better than any other this season.......they just put away their chances and their half chances that is all. same goes for any big scoring victory.......england beating holland euro 96, newcastle beating man utd 5-0, etc, etc..............it is all a matter of putting chances away. we probably should have despatched FCB for 3 or 4 based on the chances we had in the first half at anfield. off the post, off the line................millimetres determine glory or failure.

i thought chelsea were pretty poor throughout the 90 mins, only joey cole added some urgency, but they achieved a great victory based on the result/goals scored.

i think we have a better chance of beating chelsea than valencia...............but i would have preferred to play valencia in the semi.

a typical bitter scouse comment above, one day you lot will open your eyes to decent football outside of liverpool fc and stop being so narrow minded.

there is a narrow line between success and failure and thats why united have the edge over liverpool this season because we will be successful in at least one if not 3 competitions this year unlike liverpool who (if they beat PSV, which I'm sure they will) will lose against chelsea in the semi's.

being a united fan I would agree that overall in the game we were no better than our best perfomance this season but we are one of the only teams who can demolish a team within minutes and the beauty of last nights game was we didn't stop until the end.

Well done to Chelsea, they fully deserved to go through. Thought Valencia fell apart in the 2nd half, they began to show how much theyre missing Baraja and Edu in midfiled.

Well done to Man Utd too, didnt see the game but beating the italains 7-1 deserves all the credit.

Seeing as theyre no spanish teams left i'll have to support the next best thing.. come on Liverpool!!! ;)

tbh I thought man u were lucky last night, ref was a bit of a "homer" imo!!!!

well done to Liverpool & Chelski though ;)

a typical man utd fan response, prob not manc;) , as you have totally misread what i'm saying, which was:

i thought you played as well last night as you have all season, which of course is to a much greater level than us cos you are nearly 20 pts ahead of us in the league and are a far better team and have far better players. my point was that the difference between success and failure is what seperates teams like you and us........how we can dominant a game at anfield but then get beat by a last minute goal. how you can create twice as many chances as last night (and not 20 yard speculative efforts) against worse teams than roma and probably will only score 2 or 3.

your last paragraph seemed to agree with the point i was making but it's alright go off on one and get all personal.   ;)

overall, i thought the valencia game was sh!t. 2nd half was a stalemate.

fair point, read between the lines a little plus i was due a rant as i've had liverpool fans taunting me all day and you were the unlucky one who I got personal with...............therefore apologies  !

i'd hate to see what you'd have been like if you hadn't won 7-1!8O  ;)

thank f^&(k me, the only liverpool fan in the manchester city centre based office (cue agentundercover;) ) was off this week. I couldent have coped. They havent let me have a moments peace since walking in my lfc shirt post the 5 (fifth) X 5 time!

however in a moment of conciliation, the display last night was one of the best i have ever seen, period (as an american may say). As grego said though, how many times will carrick hit the second goal and fine the net? or rooney hit the post and bounce out. you make you own luck and all, but the god were shining. Heres hoping they shone a little early! ohh thats not conciliatry is it!?

Man Utd were immense last night no team in the world could have lived wiht that kind of flowing attacking football and in Ronaldo they have the best player in the world at the present moment ...also Chelseas result was amazing to considering no team beats Valencia at home in Europe .

Well well AC Milan beat Bayern Munich 2-0 tonite on their home turf 8O don't think many predicted they would get a result there , so it's a Man United v AC Milan semi final first leg @ OIld Trafford on 24th April, Liverpool play Chelsea after beating PSV 1-0 tonite, should be 2 cracking games.8)
