Champions League Qualifiers 2nd Leg

Even worse he supports a foreign team.

Celtic are a scottish club, he is from Ireland.

A thought provoking and highly intelligent comment by yourself sir i may add

Don't you know i am unique in the fact that i am the only person on the planet who supports a football team from another country, Guinness Book Of Records for me geezer.

Lemon:roll:

when are they going to rename this competition

"The UEFA Champions, runners up & back door qualifiers league"

as thats what it has become. I think allowing these teams into it via the tradesmans detracts from its prestige. For me it's not the same as the competition I grew up to know as "The European Cup" so dominated in the 70's & 80's by Liverpool and the mighty Villa!!!

looking at the tv last night you think that celtic had won the bloody thing, not earned the right to stay in for another go!!!

We are the Champions of Scotland therefore should not have to go through these qualifying stages, no team who are Champions of their resective league should, runners up of whatever league should.

And when a team wins in a penalty shootout after a dramatic game what do you expect,my nerves were shot to bits there last nite, bit like like city fans doing the Mardi Gras on the streets of Stockport after your victory over United.

That logic doesn't work because then you'd have to give automatic berths to the champions of Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Slovenia, etc.

You might reply "well then, only give the automatic champions births to the strongest UEFA countries." To which I'd reply by pointing out that this is exactly what happens!

It's all based on the performance of a country's teams in Europe in the previous few years. Scottish teams just haven't done well enough to keep an automatic birth.

I can point to one example I know - the champions of Russia went straight into the group stage this year after previously having to qualify. And Russia has a qualifying spot for the number 2 team for only the 2nd time this year.

I'm sure you know how this works... so why would you possibly think Celtic deserves an automatic birth? :?

Because based on our performance last season we should've been able to bypass the qualifiers, but that's beside the point, if a team wins their respective league no matter how poor that league might be they should not have to enter into qualifiers,it's UEFA being selective and ensuring certain teams always get in and of course the financial windfall as well, it's all wrong.

have to say I agree with the rag on this one ;)

at the end of the day its the "Champions League" and therefore should be made up of the respective champions from each uefa member, if not then it should be called the "whoever are deemed by uefa as likely to bring in most tv viewers + sponsorship/advertising revenue league"

It's based on several years performance of your team and other teams from your federation. Not just one year, no matter how good it was. So no, you shouldn't have been able to bypass the qualifyers.

So, are you advocating a 53-team tournament of only national champions?
That'd be fun to watch :? Real Madrid v Neftchi Baku, Dinamo Kiev v Total Network Solutions, Grasshoppers v Manchester United, etc, etc. You'd only have top European clubs playing each other in April.

I'm not trying to be elitest... I think teams from each federation should get a chance to qualify, and I'm 50/50 on the idea of cutting the top leagues down to a 3 team max. But what you advocate is madness.. sheer madness I tell you!

Just bring back a good old knock out for the champions I say!

Morbyd re 'That'd be fun to watch :? Real Madrid v Neftchi Baku etc' welllllll.....it would be champion on champion & thats what it was all about of course, once in the day...when men where men and footballers were called Stan & Jack...

Whether its more desirable to be dogmatic about the makeup of it or to accept that it should be deliberatly skewed in favour of ensuring the big boys end up there year after year for the sakes of showbiz - which in fairness to Johnny, it is......from a pure self interest point of view I have to go with the latter, Liverpool would not have got near it for ages!

Also its the big match ups that draw the crowds/publicity ergo sponsors/investors ergo crazy cash. Would Roman et al be on the scene to watch the aforemention Neftchi Baku etc?

ere y'are...spot the yank advocating a competition played only between

Man u, liverpool, chelski, barca, real madrid, bayern munich, milan, inter, juve & roma and call it "The European Championship"

where have we seen this before......hmmmmm? oh yeah....the "world series"

of course it should just be the champions of each nation in the Champions League

and every team should have to qualify as it was at the start

2 qualifying rounds to get to the group stages - everyone in at Q1

but given my team benefits from the current format....its ok ;)

Michel Platini seems to be on the glue with his latest plans
Cup winners to get a CL place - so 5/6 games gets you in the CL whist coming 4th in the 40 game EPL gets you hee-haw

Ha ha ha...

I didn't say that at all!

How is it any different to the FA Cup or Carling Cup? Everyone's got a chance, but bigger teams join in later... just like with the CL.

Can't believe this is a discussion. What Johnny said was wrong in every way as Morbyb says. It would amazingly stupid to have any old countries champion straight into the group stages, therefore it is judged via a system, to see who are the "strongest nations". It is not one fella sitting behind a desk saying, "Oh Celtic are a bit crap, let's not put them in. It is a system, a system by which countries from Montenegro could qualify automatically and teams from England could not. As Morbyd says, the fixtures, the challenge and standard of football would all be ruined any other way.

IMO this sytem is fair, just look at Ajax sitting at home. IMO play your way into the goup stages will give the davids of europe a chance.
