Security Cameras
The mayor, Lurdes Costa, held her first meeting with the Central Governments representative on the island, Manuel Bar, in an attempt to sort out the security problems currently facing the capital. Petty crime is rife during the summer months as professional thieves target the many tourists on the island. They both agreed the installation of cameras at key points around the centre is now a necessity.
..... this morning the town hall announced they already have all the permits to install the 5 cctv cameras in la marina and sa penya, which should be working by april :!:

like in san antonio, if it works they will install more.....

New Policing
The newly restructured police force of Ibiza Town was presented to the public last week by the Town Hall. The new system will try and improve strained relations between police officers and the residents by assigning officers to particular areas. There will be nine areas covered by foot patrols, each being covered by one officer and in the case of sa Penya and the Marina, two officers. The other areas which will come under the control of the foot patrols will be Vara de Rey and sa Capelleta, Es Pratet, ses Figuretas and es Viver, Ca n´Escandell and Cas Serres, Sa Colomina, Dalt Vila and Ensanche Norte, and finally Mercat Nou and Ensanche Sur. Those areas not included will be covered by car patrols.
The new system will also involve officers carrying a mobile phone, with the telephone numbers being made known to neighbourhood associations and retail groups, so as they are able to contact their "favourite" officers.
The councillor in charge of the new project, Ricardo Albin, said changes needed to be made and he hoped the residents of the municipality saw the advantages of the new system. He claimed it had been designed for their benefit and would improve relations between the force and the public.
The Councillor also announced the installation of five security cameras in the sa Penya and Marina area of the municipality. He revealed a large proportion of the municipalities crimes were committed in these areas and hoped the new measures would curb the growing problem. The cameras will be operational by April 2008 and depending on the success of the initiative, Albin did not rule out the installation of more machines.

Petty Crime Cut
Crime has been drastically reduced in the capital, according to the councillor in charge of public safety, Ricardo Albin. The statement came as he revealed that the security cameras located at various points across the city centre would remain in operation during the winter, in order to help cut petty crime.
The councillor claimed street crime had been slashed considerably because of the extra work of the police, in addition to the cameras which are located in Mercat Vell, la plaza de sa Font, on the corner of Plaza Antoni Riquer and calle de la Virgen.
