cassius and lawler at space yesterday

hi russ, i have friends from berlin and hamburg going on about it all the time too - and i thought ibiza was the vanguard of electronica??

is the island now reacting to change instead of inspiring it?

I think that Ibiza isn't really known for being at the forefront of electronica. It's baleric sound and sunny house are more appropriate for the climate.

Here in the Uk and over in Holland, Germany and pretty much most of northern europe have taken electro to their hearts coz it's more suitable for the climate it think. It appeals to the 'rock' crowd too. It can get a bit 'dark' for my tastes.

Saying that, Felix DH ripped up space last year, Jamie Z plays electro in there too i thought. Doesnt Wally Lopez play quite electro too?

Can't imagine Damien Lazarus on the Space terrace though

Derrick Carter was playing some electro at WMC in Miami this year and I loved it personally! :D I still love good house and he was mixing that in as well, but it was refreshing to hear something a little different on my last night there, and everyone, including the staff, could not stop dancing! Very good night imo! :D

>> forefront of electronica

not sure i agree with that russ. talking about the good ol' days, it was rampling's oakenfold's and holloway's experiences here which started the whole thing.

then 10 years later in what i call the 'year of trance' (1998) it was here the the big room anthem sound was first heard. the paul van dyks etc who up until them had been relatively unknown. (i am sure this was a reaction to speed garage which everyone hated lol ;-)

i also associated ibiza with the breaking of new tracks which then went and took the world by storm - "sun in shining", "stardust", "energy 52's cafe del mar". but that's hardly vanguardish behaviour

i do see what you mean. hmmmm. have to think about that.

Electro, specially Electropop is "the thing" of the season in Barcelona

Quite. As an ex-punk, I can smell a bandwagon rumbling down the Talamanca road. I've been bored stiff with the maintstream Ibiza music scene for 3-4 years.

Funking delighted that Ibiza has finally woken up that there's a whole new (err...ish) scene out there: call it electroclash, electro whatever. Shame it's years too late. Mystified me why the island was so slow to adapt. I guess the big promoters daren't take the risk with something newish, and with the Disneyification of the Ibiza club scene smaller outfits have got squeezed. But that's a crap excuse really. Trouble is that it's been around so long 3 plus years in Hoxton now (?) that things have already shifted.

Still better late than never. If I have to hear another PR saying "funki house" I'll sceam.

I too thought the Coco Loco and Back rooms at the Mish rocked last week on a electro/rock tip and heard some good sounds at Ciao Rosina in Talamanca the other week.

Interesting post everyone :D

The electro sound has been big in London for a while now. It can be done really well but I am still of the school of thought that it is still more a fashion thing rather than getting 'lost in music'.

electro nights do seem to attract a more 'rock' crowd than housey-housey nights do.

I, for one, don't have any problems getting lost in electro 8)

Maybe I haven't seen the right dj's.

I saw Felix DH cat rock space last summer but thats the only real memory I have of a dj rocking a crowd.

Maybe I spend too much time posing in Hoxton

I was at Space for this and I have to agree Cassius was awsome and the terrace was going mad. I don't think he was all electro, dropping records like flashdance aswell(which we went mad to). It was Fantastic!! I chilled out upstairs in the vip as well for a bit, cool up there never knew it existed before.
Can you tell me what record steve lawler played after good life it was an old 90's rave song which I know but can't remeber what its called. It was about the second to last song on the terrace. I was going ballastic on the podium.

That was my #1 party this summer: Lawler & Cassius 8) I danced my butt off and was left begging for more.. Anyone remember the last track Steve Lawler dropped?

Afraid i lost too many braincells over the weekend to remember the last song, though the set was just amazing and atmosphere was out of this World.... :D

Don't suppose anyone knows one of the other tunes lawler played - it was slightly unusual in that it had a very strong bassline but had a very nice, simple melody on the top - almost felt slightly classical, if that makes sense!... :?:

Back to space in August... can't wait...
