Caribbean Islands...

I`ve been to one or two,

Granada, nice Island, (although I went for NY after the hurricane in Sept) great people, stay here if you can http://www.calabashhotel.com/ not cheep, but the service is amazing, Sit on the beach, rent a car, not much else

Barbados, Tourist Caribbean at it`s worst, plenty of night life and things to do though

St Lucia, Nice Island , nice people, very clean and tidy, beach , car and relax,

Antigua, Similar to St Lucia, but not as clean and tidy, beach car relax

Cuba, Recommend for it`s cheapness, Amazing people, Amazing country to see, also recommended "just to see it " A different life ! some beach but get a car and go out, Havana is buzzing at night,

Jamaica, rougher than Barbados, But we had an amazing two weeks over one new year there for £500 each all inc, (also good for powder based entertainment) Plenty to do if you want to risk going out, but well worth it,

Dominican republic, It`s been 10 years so it may be better, but otherwise , ****, two weeks on the bog for the whole hotel apart from me, (I found vast amounts of cheep local rum kept the bad guts away) others said the same about diferent hotels

Which ones would I go back to ? Granada 100% if I could afford it, that hotel is amazing, Gary Rhodes runs the restaurant, high tea is served @ 6 pm, the bar staff even delivered me "home" on a sack truck when I had 1 or 2 :)
A lazy pampered holiday, no need for taxi`s, the staff will take and pick you up from anywhere (in the hotel car) and if you have a few $ spare, go for the rooms with a private pool in
Cuba to see more of the country and meet more of the people (also cheep as chips)

Have a good one
Tim

Who's been to them? Which one(s), aside from Cuba?

Did you enjoy it? Was it a 'sit on the beach' holiday or was there nightlife and other things to do?

Trying to decide where to go for New Years.

St Lucia - Lovely place, very green and hilly, probably one of the most picturesque and visually spectacular. Very friendly people. Lot's of stuff to do as well as just lounge around on the beach. Most of the resorts are based on the caribean side where the sea is calmer and warmer as the atlantic side is quite cooler and more of a rocky coastline. As it's volcanic, most of the beaches tend to be a bit on the chocolate colour so not your picture postcard carribean beaches (apart from Jalousie Plantation who import their white sand from Guyana). If you are into diving, then the waters at the foot of the Pitons are protected diving sites, we went snorkeling there and it was amazing. Late Oct/Nov sees the annual Rum Festival where they fly in all the worlds best jazz musicians and world reknowned chefs so thats good fun to go to, despite winehouse trying to ruin it last year . Theres also waterfalls, an active volcano and botanical gardens and rainforest to visit so well worth checking out. And that Bounty rum is one sweet medicine!!;)

Also been to Union Island and most of the grenadines, which were beautiful pink sand beaches (because of the coral) and the cleanest waters I have ever seen. and barbados (airport)

Hi,

I've been living on Tortola for the past four years (British Virgin Islands - a 20 minute flight from Puerto Rico) and it is a really beautiful unspoilt island with world class beaches. However its very very quiet with a few small wine and beach bars and some impressive restaurants. So I wouldn't recommend coming here to 'party'. But it is known as the sailing capital of the world and if you're thinking of a romantic getaway, you can't beat this place.

So I've been to most of the surrounding islands to prevent 'rock fever' kicking in..

Puerto Rico - Great for shopping, Old San Juan is really cool, beaches are great. A lot to offer but very spread out.

Antigua - the benidorm of the caribbean

St Martin - Class. Truely a great place. It is split in two distinct parts the French and Dutch sides. They even speak their native French / Dutch language. So the French side is perfect for restaurants and wine bars - the Dutch side brilliant for casinos, night clubs etc...HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ISLAND!!! Had some great times there

St. Lucia - Beautiful, nice beaches, typical Caribbean Island, laid back etc

USVI - St Thomas, St John - both great little Americanised islands worth a look if you go to bvi as they are just 30 minutes apart.

They are the ones that spring to mind. Hope it helps!

GRACIAS!8)
