Car Insurance Question

I'm insured fully comp on my car.... if I want to add another driver (Jon) onto my policy, should this cost me?

The reason I'm asking is I done an online quite with elephant.co.uk to add Jon on as another named driver, and they say it will cost me an extra £500! That's basically as though Jon has his own insurance on the car, all we want is him to be named as a driver.

Is there any cheaper way of doing this? :?

Get John a wig and if he pulls over he can say he's you. Is he good at remembering your birthday?

2 reasons why it may increase:

Technically the insurance will always be priced according to the 'highest risk' driver. I'll only whisper this but Men are statistically worse drivers than women, and comparitive premiums are always weighted higher in the Mans category.

Also, if you have 2 drivers, the Ins co will be wary that (in the absence of the knowledge of Jon and his own insurance- is Jon insured with the same Co?) you could be effectively be "doubling" the cars 'road time' (say, if it was going from being your runaround, to your runaround plus Jon's to-and-from work transport.

All that said, the more important point, is that Car Insurance is one of (if not the) the most competitve and dynamic (with regards to underwriting principles and pricing) classes of Insurance. You'd be mad not to shop around (though I do know elephant are pretty good)

The thing is.... it seems mad. My yearly car insurance is only about £300, Jon would probably use the car about once a week, if that, and that's only to drive himself to football practice and back again (abotu 15mins each way).

It seems crazy to pay £500 to give him that privilege??

everything bloody costs in the country - not paying 500 a year for something i will hardly use

might just get a scooter for 500 and use it for football and work - at least i will get more use out if it
