Nostrum... I have noticed that you seem to get a lot of holidays? didn't you go to Ibiza for 3 weeks, and had another holiday.. sure you have some more booked up soon!
well, heellloooo (or shall i say sawasdee-kap) - i'm back from thailand!
short review (really short for my averages ):
flew to bangkok and spent the first few days there. sightseeing (amazing wat's - their temples), good shopping (we got some tailormade suits!), good food - from very, very cheap street kitchen up to some fancy stuff as “BED” or "eat me" and "vertigo" (rooftop bar on the 65th or something floor). truly an amazing city, but after a few days, we left - the air in BKK is sh1t and the whole (huge) city is buzzing 24hrs with massive traffic!
so we took the overnight train northbound to chiang mai. there we picked up a rental car and explored northern thailand for almost a week. beautiful landscapes, more stunning wats and friendly people. good food, beautiful weather and some really nice laidback towns as mae hong son and pai (oh yes, pai is lovely). we also went to the golden triangle region (where myanmar, thailand and laos come together), but that's really a tourist trap and a waste of time. nothing really to see there!
from chiang rai (where we dropped off our car), we flew back to bangkok and onwards to koh chang island. also a very laidback place and very nice! tourism there has only really started a few years ago and we had some beautiful days on the beach there after travelling around lots!
conclusion - we both liked thailand very much, but we also agreed on the fact that we couldn't live there. in a way, we prefer the southern european part! but as landscapes are stunning, people are friendly and food, accomodation and also shopping is cheap (if you want it cheap), i can understand why so many backpackers go there every year!!! next time i fly there, i want to hit the southern part, including the koh samui and koh pangan side as well as the phuket side (well, there i would want to see koh lanta and so on...not really keen on seeing patong beach...).
so now i'm back...working really hard is on for the next few months. @utagaura: you're right, i have had quite a lot of holidays this year. in switzerland, you normally get 4-5 weeks holidays per year. but as i had worked mucho, mucho overtime during the last winter, i had an additional week of holidays..
