Bunker Sessions #21/#22 FULL VERSION - 11.09.2013 (Moroder electrotasche edition)

Last month we travelled from here to eternity to pay homage to Italo-disco supremo, Giorgio Moroder. Porn moustaches were par for the course as our faithful team of selectors stayed up till way past midnight on a school night to pay tribute to the man who revolutionised d.i.s.c.o not once, but twice.

Moroder discovered Donna Summer in ‘75 as she dry humped a microphone within an inch of her life to disco’s blueprint of the female climax, ‘Love to love you baby’. She gushed no less than 23 orgasms, (according to the BBC) achieving post coital success across the planet. Then there was the ‘76 anthem, ‘I feel love’; its hypnotic arpeggiated basslines sending generations of dancers to a future-disco nirvana as they shifted in and out of phase. Critics poured hate over its simplicity and lack of musicianship, but those with an ear for the dance floor, including Brian Eno, forecasted a tidal wave of change, otherwise known as proto-techno...and oh my, how right they were!

"Sometimes I think I could sue the whole world for infringement of copyright," he says of the numerous tracks that have since ripped off his trademark bassline. "But I'm happy if they like the sounds and the melodies."

Look out for Kraftwerk (obviously - 8:58) as well as sexual revolutionary King Missile (21:40), an industrial, EBM tribute from Die Krupps, The Flowerpot Men and Nitzer Ebb (Slimelight anyone? 49:10), we even get down with the American b-boy kids (Whodini, Rock Steady Crew - 2:08:57)...and no fitting tribute would be complete without a couple of Giorgio’s greatest lesser known collaborations (Nina Hagen - 37:30, Japan - 2:43:17).

The latter part of the session kicks off with sculptress of sound, Delia Derbyshire, who brought you the BBC theme tune that changed the world (Dr Who - 2:19:42) and the teenage prodigy who revolutionised the experimental, ambient and techno sound (Aphex Twin - 2:22:46).

Big thanks to this month’s industry contributors, Sam Scranton from Volcano!, Jenny Murphy from London’s definitive house giant, ‘Need2SOUL’ and personal hero, performance artist and gender terrorist, David Hoyle. xxx

Nearly five hours of blissful electronica for your auris.

Moroder - the Bunker salutes you! :-D
