Late 70's...

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

why don't CDM do more with that building?
I know they have their beer stored under it but in this fantastic picture you can see the arches open.

Such a fantastic fine Ric!!!

Not a lot can be done with it, they've got the 'new' shop/club area, they've got the older venue with its history and unique architecture, can't see what else could be done?

always thought CDM was the first built on the strip, it seems savannah (or the building now known as) was open first?!

look what i found on the spotlight forums...

the first one was actually the bar of the hostal catalina (nowadays savannah ;) ), which was also the only building in ses variades in 1957 when catalina prats torres and his husband josé luis valdés ordieres opened the small hostal (now turned into a hotel)!! :idea:

the view from catalina:

The place that is now Mambo Sushi hasn't changed, anyone know what it originally was?

No, sorry I don't mean the original CDM but the building between it and Savannah. CDM have their tables in front of it and speakers on it but it is boarded up but in this picture you can see it all open

Wow! My grandparents were San Antonio regulars in the 60s and I always wonder what it would have been like then! Can't imagine there would be be much more than a few bars in what is now the old town/west end and the beginnings of the sunset strip shown in ric's photo. Thanks.

Yeah got what you meant ;) Don't know what they could do with that boarded area?

Why does San An still have that area (wasteland?) just north of Mambos? Surprised no ones tried to build on it.

oh there are plans! I think matutes has bought the land if I'm not mistaken and wants to build on it, but they are fighting against it. McRackin, heeeeeelllp, he'll know it!

As much as I'm sure the older residents think it's ruined now, it's surely nicer now than when all the hotels were being built. Concrete shells look so horrible.

A place I used to go to in Greece on family holidays was like that. A lot of building work stopped due to funds running out, the place looked so much better when the villas and hotels were actually finished, even if it did take a decade.
