Like she said "Bill Gates has been giving vast amounts of his money away for years"

I don't remember him asking for a pat on the back before today's news.

1) Because charities apply to his foundation for funding- a little diffcult to do if you don't know who to apply to.
2) Because in the interests of openess and transparency charities are required to publish where their money comes from/what they do with it.
3) Because his charitable organisation is hugely influential on the actions of other people in the charitable and private sectors due to his wealth and influence and by putting his name behind projects it encourages others, both individually and as companies to do the same
4) Because if he didn't you lot would all be moaning about what a stingy git he is.

Scoobie has just explained this very well about 4/5 posts previously.

How many people on this board replied to the post about the Tsunami appeal by posting that they have/are giving a donation to the appeal?

Surely thatsd the same thing?

Personally, as someone who has struggled to find funding for fantastic charities doing innovative and much needed work I welcome anything that makes my life and that of other fundraisers a little easier. The fact is that without his contribution many of these projects would not have taken place, and I doubt that the people who have benefited give two hoots about Mr Gates motives.

FFS Bill Gates has never given any money to an African government. He gives it to agencies like Oxfam carrying out projects in Africa. Trying reading something about a subject before ranting on about it!

Oh...and I know lots about the African situation thanks ;)

im sure you have struggled!

 im sure you have struggled to find funding!.....if only everyone was doing the right thing!.....then there would be no need for charities!.i mentioned africa....only because the poor africans never seem to have nothing.not because the richer countries dont give...they do.they give money....and it goes straight into the back pocket of your local MP in downtown freetown(sierra-leonne).they all steal from there own poor...culture driven i may add.bill gates could solve africas problems at the stroke of a pen......pps my flat mates a refugee from sierra-leonne....hes not here just now....but he says....too many charities giving money to govts....rather than giving aid directly to the poor!.

Scoobie, if I give a big amount of money to a charity foundation or whatever, do I have the right to not be public?

Yes you do, but if you have your own foundation, which you are on the board of, as Bill Gates is, you are required to release the names of the trustees, and the accounts showing what you have given, and to whom.

I suppose he could give huge chunks of money to charities without using his foundation, but I don't see why he shouldn't choose the projects that his money is spent on. Accountability to funders is an excellent way of insuring accountability, value for money and delivery of projects to a high standard and on time.

And does he get lots of fiscal benefits by having a fundation or giving money for philantropic causes?

He'd get a lot more fiscal benefits by keeping the £400m himself, that's for damn sure.

Silvia you seem really aggessive today, you okay or did Bill gates steal your first boyfriend or something? ;)

I'm only joking before you start on me :D

Yes, but there are thousands and thousands of foundations in the US alone- this is not an unusual case, it is the norm in charitable giving. I don't think Bill needs the money

Having a foundation means that his charitable giving is accountable to government rules and regulations, and that it can employ experts in fields such as public health and HIV to assess and monitor projects. His foundation doesn't really operate just as a means to give away money, but more like a charity that dispenses grants to projects working in its fields of interest.
