Mosquitoes
Each year a fumigation programme is carried out to control the number
of mosquitoes across the wetlands of the island.
However, this year those involved explained that the work was going to be
unusually complicated, due to the abnormal rainfall and high temperatures
during early spring.
So much so, a technical specialist has been employed to join the current team.
He will co-ordinate between the company carrying out the work and the people
living in the area, whilst a GPS system has been incorporated to detect zones
where mosquitoes congregate.
The poison which they use is selective and ecological as it is only the larva
which is affected by the spray, and not the adults.
Every so often the process needs to be repeated, as “after ten days the poison
loses effectiveness, but after twelve days, in strong sunshine,
it has lost all its propertiesâ€.
Only in the case of heavy rainfall, when the insects become more active,
will a spray be used to actually kill the adults, but with a low dosage
which does not affect bees.
The use of these pesticides is not permitted in ses Salinas, as it is a protected area.
The Environment Councillor also commented that half-built properties in the area
were also not helping matters.
He explained that on returning to the island by plane at the beginning of the week,
he had noticed a new building development in Talamanca with 70 swimming pools
all containing untreated water.
As the complex is under construction no maintenance has been carried out
on the pools, which need to be kept full of water, and which could cause
enormous mosquito problems in this part of Ibiza Town.
