be careful,jellyfish!!!!

Jellyfish problem still quite bad - saw them in the sea round the north coast quite a bit over the last three weeks, and two days ago at Cala Bassa there were hundreds of jellyfish all washed up, in the surf and the water. No one dared swim. YUK! It was like jellyfish soup! You couldn't walk along the sand without having to skip round them. The whole beach was a bit mucky, too to be fair, litter and rubbish strewn - we'd been to Tarida and Conta only a couple of days before and they were lovely and clean. Hadn't been to Cala Bassa for years, and think it will be a while before we revisit.
While over there, I read in this week's the 'Ibiza Sun' that this year the local fishermen are struggling to catch Red Tuna, as they say it has been overfished (blamed on the japanese using sonar) -it appears that the Red Tuna normally eats the same plankton as the jellies, it's meant the jellies have been greedily feasting and breeding.

Ibiza will face a jellyfish crisis this year, according to the director general of the Fisheries association, Miguel Angel Calviño. Instead of reproducing in the north of Spain, many have stayed in waters off Ibiza and reproduced. This number, added to those that will emigrate down from northern waters, will ensure severe problems this summer.

Calviño explained that he was to visit Alicante this week, to discuss methods used there to control the problem. The technique preferred there involves the use of two low boats with a net in between, which is then used to scoop up all the jellyfish. This process is carried out during the early morning when, due to the water being cold, the jellyfish are nearer to the surface. However Calviño continued by bemoaning the fact that his department did not have the sufficient funds to tackle the problem efficiently, and urged the Govern to realise the detrimental effect that this situation would have for tourism on the island.

this is the article of the sun...

Medusa scum ruined my diving fun at Sa Trixa last year. :(
I'll happily lash them on the sand if they come near me.

yes it does work! a friend got stung then he peed in a bottle and then put the pee on him..no pain after!
Irina got stung at Cala d' Hort last year, and a couple of our friends were stung on a yacht trip I took (at Atlantis and at another spot on the West coast where there's an underground cave).

We learned that the pee cure really does work

(Sil - the difference is that jellyfish aren't engandered and are a nuisance! They're expendable! )

That could be problematic Sil, so just because I like you, here's a quick lesson.

If you're attacked by this:

getting Pep to wee on you won´t help.

If this little bugger gets you:

it might.

Clear? Feel free to print my post and bring into the beach/jungle for recognition purposes;)

Thanks for bumping this post. Seeing that tiger again has made my day!:D

Just returned from two weeks in Ibiza on Monday – the first thing we were warned about were the medusas – however we spent most of our time at Salinas & Cala Yondel and not one !!!

It all appeared to be which beach you were on – some friends said that Talamanca had loads during the same period – so be selective !!!

i can only agree bellagio. i swim regularly in salinas and playa d'en bossa and have not seen one for weeks!

you must be flexible. if you see some jellyfish in one beach, then go to the next one - chances are it will be empty.

i have certainly not experienced the so-called plague which was threatened!

p.s. anyone who does get stung - urine or vinegar are equally effective :)

We were on the West of the Island last week and my other half got stung whilst we were at Gracio. (Chuckles evilly) Quick trip to the medic station tho and all was ok
