When you guys say Bank holiday, is that a government holiday or just bank? Luckily this Monday is Memorial Day here state side and we also have off.

Pete:

Bank Holiday is another term in the UK for a public holiday. Kinda like "Can I have a fag?". It means "Can I have a cigarette?"; not ...

Ya... I think it's emerged so they don't confuse it with the term "holiday", which is what we call vacation.

No idea what we're up to this weekend. Might go see Ron Carroll at club Dyagilev on Saturday. Nothing else planned yet.

Wrong again

Bank Holidays get the name cos originally they were days in England when banks were closed, it then spread to most other companies.

That I knew. But why do you still use "bank" now when everyone is closed? Why not shorten it to just "holiday"?

Gonna answer the question?

We still say bank holiday because that's just the way it is - not really a proper explanation.

Because the banks were closed it technically was quite difficult to do business so thats why a lot of other businesses closed too.

Friday - a civilised evening of fine wine and intellectual conversation with my favourite things, Babs and Cookie. :p

Saturday - hoping my sister will pop her baby out so I can go visit. If not, go to the pub.

Sunday - pack for my holiday and learn Portuguese.

Monday - fly to Portugal - near Lagos in the Algarve for a week's holiday. :p :p :p :p

Friday - Nice meal in Liverpool to celebrate the end of girlfriends exams.
Sat - not much, preparing for.....
Sunday - HIFI!!!

just got told that saturday is summer eights here in oxford so I'll spend the day by the river getting pissed on pimms and watching rowers
