Avalon or Spirit in NYC?

Has anyone been to either of these new clubs in NYC? They seem to be bringing in the bigger names so I'm wondering if the sound system and the vibe are fun? I want to go to one in May for my birthday and I'm wondering what the merits are of each? Which would you recommend?

what's up berry? funny you're from philly cause i'm living in nyc and gonna move there in july. anyway, if you wanna go clubbing here, the hot spot now is crobar (just saw sasha and digweed there last weekend) best venue, a little upscale a la pacha, and most attractive ppl. as for vibe, definitely arc but that's shutting down late april. as for avalon, the venue is one of the most interesting clubs you'll ever experience, being that it's a maze, and you'll wander endlessly. they've been drawing in all the talent the past several months but the crowd can be really sketchy. but yeah, don't waste your time at spirit. waste of time in all aspects. other clubs to consider: marquee, cielo (mon night), sullivan room, centrofly...

question to you...what're the spots in philly?

Thanks for the info! I didn't even know that Crobar opened in NY. Been to the one in Miami and it was great. I'll have to check who's spinning there the 1st weekend in May when I want to go up. Out of curiousity, what makes the people at Avalon sketchy? Is it a young crowd? Just wondering.

Anyway, in Philly in the summer the hot spots are definitely down in Atlantic City. They have a few clubs that are decent (Casbah in Taj Mahal & *sometimes* Tru). They have a lot of after parties on the beach too. In the winter its varied year to year. The scene has really died down since 1999 - 2000. For whatever reason, there used to be a lot going on in the city but now you really have to look. Emerald City and Transit have decent line ups sometimes. Other than that I would check the City Paper to see what is going on from week to week (www.citypaper.net)

Hmm.... ok, I saw that Roger Sanchez was at Spirit a week or two ago so I was thinking it couldn't be all bad!

Anyone know what the lineup are supposed to be like at any of the clubs the 1st weekend in May??

I was at Sanchez. He's played better sets. Was way better at Pacha. There are lineups at clubbersplanet.com and the club websites usually post lineups as well.

Berry -- whats up. I live in Boston now but grew up around the Philly area.

I saw Ferry Corsten spin at Avalon last November -- and I was not impressed. I think "vdubjb" is right on. The crowd is not good. There were a lot of slobs there. Plus I liked the interior a lot better when the club was Limelight.

ARC is definately a place you should go out of your way to make before it closes. Maybe you could try and make it to the closing parties.

Hearing a lot of great things about Crobar, as was mentioned above. Plan on checking that out in April.

Hope this helped

hey.. thanks. i'll be at the ARC closing on the 24th... that's my birthday weekend... perfect for an all out party till you can't stop night!

:P :D 8O

spirit is bringing in some good djs, just the crowd has been terrible....if you will be in nyc the first week of may, you have to check out way out west at avalon may 7.....also darren emerson at avalon on april 30, as for arc, it is a good club with great music, but no alcohol (although they did serve alcohol for the howells closing party, but i think that was a one time thing)

Yea. They are also going to have a liquor liscence for their closing party. I guess they have made some exceptions to the general rule as they are on their way out.

Anyone else going?? :D

Went to Avalon on the 27th March and had a really good night there, quite a quaint club with a great crowd not sure who the dj's there were but they were really good and the system sounded ok too.
