Aspartame Question for those who packed up smoking

I stopped smoking back in October 2006 and since then have put on weight :evil::evil:

I developed what I thought was a healthy habit of consuming Smints.
Having done a bit of research it seems this Aspartame and Xylitol are the spawn of satan. I have read all sorts of information from wild conspiracies to qualified docs giving it the big thumbs down.

I eat good food and run 2-4 times per week yet still remain bloated.

Anyone had adverse effects from too much sugar free foodstuffs.???

I would tell everybody to avoid anything with artificial sweetners. They DO effect the natural functions of the body. Drink normal Coke not Diet Coke. Diet Coke will make your body bloated. Or better still drink water. When you shop in the supermarket only buy unproccessed food, nothing in a box.
Try it for a month. Tell me that you don't feel different.
I find that any food that has been messed around with or proccessed to taste good does weird things to you. If you only eat meat, fish and vegetables in there natural state you will generally be able to eat pretty much as much as you want of them.
I'm 49 and can still go surfing all day and party all night and pass for 40.
We in the UK have adopted the American vice of conveinience food stuffs. The Meditterian countries have not. Look at the Spanish and Italians, they always seem to be eating and drinking...but they generally seem much healthier and not so overweight.
Try it.

Aspartame isn't terribly good stuff and should be avoided as much as poss. Stick to the real stuff, basically reduce consumption of sugary stuff in general. However, Xylitol is actually a pretty good substitute for sugar - it is natural not chemical, low GI ( ie, doesn't adversely affect your insulin levels ) and good for your teeth too, believe it or not !

All sugar substitutes cause digestive issues and Xylitol can cause bloating when consumed too often...

Have to agree with previous post and say stick to identifiable natural produce rather than processed anything if you can. Have good quality dark chocolate when you need a fix, that's my cure-all, with dark chocolate nuts and raisins too !

Good luck.

.... just the same as you, totally bloated....

I have cut out all diet drinks, chewing gums, mints etc - only because they bloat me totally.....

I stopped smoking 1 year and 1 week ago and totally packed on the pounds - I am still 10lbs overweight - last year was all about the cigs - this year, now the cravings have gone is all about shifting the extra poundage.

Can I recommend you start flushing your system by drinking either Green/White tipped tea - if you dont like those, try a cup of boiled water with lemon first thing in the morning and just drink water all day if you can manage it.

it seems to be working anyway.....

I remember years ago my mum saying how aspartame was linked to mild depression - or something of the sort - so she was always wary about what was in our drinks as children/teens.

I found I lost a lot of weight due to cutting out fizzy drinks all together, when I was at my first office job I found I used to drink a can a day - not diet either - having a vending machine in the foyer didnt help I have to say or a shop over the road.

I still get very bloated now but I have narrowed that down to having a case of IBS which I still need to get properly checked out

Right this will be my third week off the smints/aspartame and already my derby isn't bloated anything like it was before. 8)8)8)

It seems that chemicals hurt the intestin balance of bacteria VS yeast causing yeast to overgrow and cause some bloating and food allergies.
I suffered a lot from bloating/stomach acidity until one Dr. recommended that I try a yeast reduction diet.
I cut down on carbs and all sugars and ate vegetables for 7 days. After reporting great improvement, he prescribed me "natural" yeast raiders and Zinc along with a more "balanced" diet. It's been 2 months now and I've never had such a level of energy.
I thought that this might help.

On the advice of an osteopath well over 10 years ago who I went to for lower back pain, I started using Dr. Vogel's detox. My back ache then was caused by digestive problems and nothing to do with my back! I began eating properly and following the detox every six months. It's absolutely amazing what changing your eating habits can achieve and how much better you feel - less bloated and awake before the alarm and no sluggishness. I never eat processed foods or ready cook meals - I just can't bring myself to do it after all these years of eating quite well and even when I'd had a heavy weekend out I'd crave veggies by Monday evening. My downfall is the local Indian but even that I've cut out quite a bit.

Bread is one of the main things I cut out years ago. I don't have it often now but it makes a huge difference to how I feel when I do eat it. I never eat white bread - I just can't do it!

Good on ya for the stopping smoking Coley - you must feel good for just doing that 8)

Apparently the detox I do is as good as :lol: It defo feels like it sometimes!

u on a seaweed diet or something?

i lasted about 4 months before the pizzas and red meat crept back into my diet...

although for some reason im having another growth spurt. (outwards)

im 33 ffs. when will this puberty **** end!

I could do with a good detox plan of some kind to relieve bloatedness & sluggishness. I have been diagnosed with IBS but all the doctors do is give me stupid pills to help it - which do help - but how can I take them for the rest of my life. There must be another way! :spank:

Try the Dr. Vogel's Detox box. You can buy the stuff individually and do it for a longer period but for starters you can get the box which has the drops and tablets in it you need and food advice. Costs about £22 and is for ten days I think. If you eat really badly and aren't organised you may find it tough to begin with but stick with it - you will notice the difference.

Is it hard to stick to whilst working though - by that I just mean like I know with some detoxes they say like Monday is the worst day to start it, try do it on quiet days as you can feel a bit faint etc etc - I sit on reception so it might not look good if I faint and end up under the desk :p

Haha - no, Emma, you won't faint  You may get a bit of a headache on day 3 but really, you do eat lots and food wise you just cut out certain things. It's just re-training how you eat. And the drops and tablets you take in the morning and evening so they won't be a problem for work.

Is it just bread you have cut out Karen, or all white carbs? I also suffer from bloating and tiredness... I have tried cutting out white bread and other white carbs, now substituting them for brown varities (rice/pasta etc) But it's so hard! I love white bread... and Jon always buys a fresh loaf every Saturday from the bakers :spank:

I try not to eat bread at all because it just makes me feel awful. I give in a bit on Saturdays becuase I love going to the cafe for a fry-up!

At home I don't eat white rice or pasta. If I do it's all wholemeal/brown and try to have corn pasta. Since I've been pregnant I've been eating fruit & fibre (wheat) in the mornings which does leave me feeling a little bloated but I can live with it for the moment.

When I detox I don't have sugar, wheat, yeast, red meat, dairy products, alcohol, tea, coffee and I try to stick with the food plan. After a while I do give in at weekends but during the week I keep pretty rigid to it.

Funny, I find peppers really bloat me and yet they are so good for you that I do still eat lots of them.

;)

So many benefits since. I do still get the odd craving from time to time but I would feel like a right mug if I started that again.

Also loving the fact that my threads don't kick up after a night out.8)8)8)
