Appraisals

Does anyone else here have to do these poxy things at work?

Its that time of year again where you have to write how well you think you have done, what went well, what you did etc etc etc a load of nonsense basically. Then you have a meeting with your boss and smile sweetly at each other and say how well your going to do next year.

Yawn, just thought I would share my doom and gloom on here at having to do it as I am unsuccessfully attempting it now :spank:

I used to detest with a passion appraisals and all that $hit when I had a permanent job, such a complete waste of time - another of the many reasons why I'll never stop freelancing cos I don't have to do any of that rubbish now:roll:

I dont know much about freelancing, does it kind of mean the same as working for yourself?

I know it is rubbish, as you can tell nobody really cares about it. Its just company policy.

mine for the last 3 years have gone like this...

Hi, Sit down, well done, you need to improve these areas, and by the way have 10% for the next 12 months.

hey ho!

I work for myself and just go and work for different companies, say they might have a project they want me to work on or they might be in $hit and need someone to sort them out, or sometimes it's covering for a sabbatical, all kind of things. Sometimes it might just be for a couple of weeks or a couple of months, where I am at the moment I've been here for nearly 5 months, they keep mentioning the dreaded 'permanent' word to me but not in a million years so I'll probably go somewhere else soon.

On top of the freedom and flexibility it also means I don't have to do any of the $hit that I used to hate at work like appraisals, team building days etc etc etc :spank:

Hate them hate them hate them with a passion :spank:

I hate this time of year and dread the words 'end year review'

Our appraisal system is nothing but paperwork with business objectives, personal objectives, a learning plan to identify potential training needs and even a section on your long term career aspirations. After all that you are then awarded a marking for performace related pay rise

Personally I beleiver a A4 piece of paper with one tick box would suffice:lol:

Yours are exactly like mine. We have to fill out Performance, Development, General, Competency details. Then we have to cross reference with numbers saying what number we think we are. Then your boss just disagrees and actually thinks your a lower number then you think you are. What fun!

That sounds interesting. What kind of things do you do? It sounds fun that you can move about and see and do different things so to speak.

We do them every three months and I love them! 8) I think it's got more to do with whether the company does them out of necessity - a legal requirement - or whether they see it as a constructive way to get the best out of their employees.

We have an appraisal once every three months and it's a great way to get rid of all the **** and start a fresh. It's a two way thing so we can whinge as much as we like but I love my job so it's hearts, flowers and beer from start to finish. :D

I work in Marketing, I like the fact that I can work for different companies and on different accounts - in the last couple of years I've worked on Coca-Cola/FIFA World Cup, Bud Silver, Fosters, Wolfblass Wine/The Ashes, The Army, some retailer accounts and loads of others so it's always interesting. Plus I have got a low attention threshold and I got bored easily so it suits me down to the ground

At least you get a performance related pay rise. My appraisals are particuarly pointless and painful as there's no link to earnings.

I wish we could whinge in ours. When we have had whinging sessions in the past which were welcomed by our boss it went very bad. 8O

We have them every 13 weeks.

They work on the basis "you can say anything or ask anything as long as it's about work".

We get loads of questions like:
"how much do i make for the company"
"How much does it cost to run the company"
"what do i have to do to get promoted?"
"why do we do this when it's ****"

Afterwards we hire the private bar at a posh hotel and go along to discuss what we've all agreed and have a few beers.

It ain't perfect but everyone is a lot happier than before when we didn't do it, as everyone knows what's going on so there are fewer assumptions and misunderstandings.

They are funny things, if your boss sees them as a chore then they are pointless. But if they genuinely care and want to improve things then they are really useful.

If your boss just goes through the motions, don't put up with it. Use it to air the things youre dissatisfied about. And ask for assurances about what action they will take.

Put it this way, I wouldn't work anywhere that didn't value my opinion, no matter what i did. As i'm an opinionated gob****e :p .

Where I work and with my particular boss its better to just get on with it and smile sweetly. We have tried the honest approach and asked for things in the past and it always backfires so as long as my boss is working here its best to grin and bare it.

Not great and not right I know but thats the way it is.

ugh... I hate these things...

We had a group one last week where we did Team building exercises... I had to be blindfolded where two of my 'teammates ( Team you know because Together Each Achieves More!) would tell me a story... and I had to draw that story on a piece of paper... blah! :spank:
