Quick help question:

I'm currently writing speculative letters to numerous marketing agencies in my area in order to find a new job. I can more or less find all the addresses I need, but how can I find out the name of someone to send it to when its not always listed?

Am I right in thinking that there's a website giving out these details?

Cheers

find their company website, cos it should have lists of managers or directors.

business directories are always out of date and very often the contact name is only a secretary anyway. :D

Some of the company's don't appear to have websites! Maybe I'm just being crap at finding them

The directories are ok, as they supply the address but there's no contact name

Just call them up, you'll get thru to reception and say you're sending a letter to the Company Director/HR Manager/whoever and they'll give you the relevant contact name.

Just a thought Fergie, this approach might not work with some companies, the company I work for has a "no names policy" on anyone over middle management and all calls/requests for information go through the Secretary (ie me....) I then decide whether its something I think they would want to see or not....

Yeah I thought this could be a problem. Any ideas for overcoming it?

hmmm not really, just explain who you are, why you are calling and what you are after and be really nice to the Secretary on the phone - some of them are right ogres ... (not me of course   ) - good luck!

If all else fails can I get away with 'Sir/Madam' or not? :?

I would imagine so, it sounds better than "To whom it may concern" at any rate, but I would definitely try to get a name (looks like you have done your homework).

Another trick is to ask for the Secretary's full name and address/email details and ask her if she would she be so kind as to pass on your CV to the appropriate person on your behalf if they do have a "no names policy".

Yes. I'd go for the calling approach too. If they have a policy then so be it, but you're likely than not to get what you want.

Ok thanks for your help guys :D

I'll get on the phone  :D

Good Luck Fergie!!!!

One other thing, I tend to find that there are very few positions available around the back end of the year and that a lot of firms recruit after New Year. (my reckoning on this is because of christmas bonuses - nobody leaves a job before christmas - just in case!!   )

All of my mates that finished uni at the same time as me are having problems getting jobs to. No one will take anyone on without experience....and we have none!

I'm sure something will come along soon :?

Its a horrible situation to be in, Catch 22 - how can you get the experience when no one will give you a chance. My husband is in a similar position and he's 37 - he has been self employed for 2 years, doing stuff for himself, but now he is wanting to get back into employment with a company, although he has a degree he is getting knocked back for interviews because he doesnt have NVQs etc, which in my book are lower qualifications than a 2:1 in a degree, its madness... and fairly soul destroying so I know where you are coming from.... Good Look Fergs, fingers crossed for you.

Hey Fergie

I use a website called http://www.businesssearchpro.co.uk/ - you can put in the category you require and search. Eg Marketing companies in the Glasgow area - it will then give you a database. You can also request contact name and it will supply that as well.

You do have to pay if you want to export the database into excel but it is not expensive at all and worth the money.

Good luck!

it's a bitch but stick with it cos once you've got the experience (which you will get) as well as the education doors a plenty open for you.

Do some freelance and volunteer work... if it's relevant it's good enough for most employers.

Give a friend or family member who's got a small business a free advertising consultation or campaign or help promote their business. I gave my first web site away so i had something to show in my portfolio.

Thanks for the advice guys :D Its actually really getting me down just now, been looking properly now for about 2 months!

Puppylover, know what you mean. I have a good 2:1, but doesnt seem to be helping at all.

Would love to be able to volunteer my services for a bit to get experience, but I have to work in my other job just now to pay the bills

Ah I better get something soon :?

I also signed up to a high profile, profit making organisations (who shall remain nameless) scheme for volunteers helping new projects get off the ground.

All good intention was there but i never actually found the time to contribute. Looked great on my cv though ;)

(guilt eliminated by the fact the organisation was a profit making one i.e. not a charity.... )

Something like this or the business directories are a good place to start. I need to find out contact names often for our own mailing list and it can be really hard. I have also been on the 'gatekeeper' side so can totally understand.

I find if I can get any sort of name it's a starting point as it shows that you have some knowledge of the company and they are more likely to give you information eg "Is Ms X still the HR Manager?" and it gives them the lead to either say yes, or no it is Ms Y!!
