Amsterdam

Love the Dam, although it's all about the Dolphin cafe for me 8)

Planning a surprise trip for my boyfriends birthday next year and would love to get an apartment too, for between 6 and 8. There are some amazing ones!

Emma, I have just been Google searching so not definite advice on who to go with - but these sites have some really cool ones..

Thanks, and will keep my eye out for the Dolphin Cafe

It's just fab, the decor is great, it's like being under the sea  Although one of their muffins consumed at the airport before heading home meant that I managed somehow to lose our duty free on the way home, but didn't realise until the next day

Sounds intriguing!

Well its all finally booked, we managed to get 3 nights and 3 days for about £180 including flights so all in all not bad.

Lets just hope we can trust Expedia and the internet!!!

Amsterdam here we come :p

Make Sure you got to Barney's for breakfast

Great Irish Breakfast as well as allsorts!

Happy days!

Emma, step into my office.

If i was to go on mastermind, the dam would be my specialist subject.

As noted previously, if your after the party boozy thing, then the bulldogs are ideal. However in terms on the herb superb, those and the grasshoppers are the Macdonalds of Amsterdam.

Coffee shops - if you want to find the stongest ganja known to mankind, head to the greenhouse. It's a bit cheesy in there, as its full of pics of the owner with various American celebs (Wood Harrleson, Tarantino) as it's known as the 'coffee shop to the stars' - however year in year out they win the canabis cup for their hydro gentically modified super dna skunk. Get some El Nino in if you can.

Aforementioned Dolphin is very good. As a rule, try not to get anything like that from the red light - its a tourist trap.

Clubbing, Escape a very glam venue that usually has trance on. Melkweg has an awesome sound system. Panama bar very swish. Sands for the bigger arena events.

Enjoy!

Well I cant wait, 3 nights and 4 days to get in lots of mischief

Thanks for the tips, think we will be avoiding the boozy bit and just stick to some of the cafes/see where it takes us

One other place i could recommend is rembrandt square, which a little walk from the main drag, though has some nicer restaurants and cafes, and is also where the Escape club ism which is nice large and probably suitable for large groups as it's not too serious

hell yeah - great place, loving downstairs there.

We didn't know it had one the first year we went and just sat upstairs - found it the second though, fantastic 8)

Have you ever stayed in an apartment over there?

Emma - so jealous, can't wait to get back just so much fun  Be wary if you go to a coffee shop with an upstairs - just remember that you will need to get back down at some point, a few times I nearly resorted to sliding down on my bum

Pink Floyd was another good one we went to. There is so many though that you will lose track!!

Im really looking forward to it plus the group of friends im going with are so much fun, the boys have already threatened to leave us and we have bets on another one of our friends having a mishap so should be fun and games all round :p

I'm off to the the Dam for the first time in years next month and will try the Greenhouse and Dolphin. Any other recommendations will be appraciated.

I no longer smoke which is a bit of a problem but there's always cake.

The advice seems to be to stay away from street sellers. Can anybody confirm that buying from them is a bad idea?

Pretty much a bad idea in any city I've ever been to (except maybe Vancouver:twisted:) - lots of cake in amsterdam, just ask around....

I personally can't stand the Dam! I understand everyone must go their once in their lives, but not for the first time in my life I was embarassed to be English, and has the complete opposite selection of vices available from what i'd want to get right stuck into!

Sounds like you've only ever been in touristic areas then, which is a shame because there's so much more to Amsterdam. Venture out to Jordaan and De Pijp, which are full of little cafes, pubs, restaurants, gardens and squares. Shopping there is much better than in the center, especially the street markets like Noordermarkt and Westermarkt on Mondays and Saturdays are fantastic - Dutch stylists come here to find unique pieces and vintage. Hardly any tourists either, and no neon signed tacky coffee shops.

For going out avoid Escape and anything round Rembrandtplein. 11 is the best place at the moment, amazing views over the city and they have great restaurant too

Veel plezier :)

I cant remember if I wrote back about this or not but we had an amazing time

We spent most of our time on Rembrandt Sq as it wasnt far from our hotel, we did go to another square but my memory is rather hazy......

Yes yes.

I went with El Missus a couple of Chrimbo's ago for New Year.

Stayed out of the centre,
Place was covered in snow. Bridges lit up with fairy lights. New Year was ace, crazy fireworks displays. It was fantastic, sooo romantic. The good lady is completely non the obvious Amsterdam things, yet thought it was magic.

It can be an amazing place.

Also I’ve been with the lads, ended up buying dodgy falafel and anti depressants from street boys, slept for two hours, sang songs and lived in the bulldog. So its probably the company you keep!

We made it to the Bulldog

Proper crowded downstairs.

We saw the Klaxons out in Amsterdam which was one of the highlights for me as the venue was amazing, it was an old church so was really intimate, probably one of the best gigs I have been to.

Am I wrongly assuming that you referrring to other 'goodies' when you talk of street sellers :?::confused:

There is no way I would buy dope on the street when there are so many amazing coffee shops with fantastic ranges, not to mention the great chat and advice you get 8)

The people we saw selling god knows what on the streets looked very very dodgy to me, not the type you would want to approach
