Anyone here got much experience of staying in Amsterdam. Me and 5 friends are looking to go but on a budget of some kind. We have tried hotels but not really found much that suits us - one of the main reasons being we are after rooms that hold more then 2 but obviously thats quite hard to find.

Anyone know of any good apartments/cheap flights/ideas?

Bit stuck at the moment and everyone is getting all stressed out because no one seems to agree on the same thing. :spank:

Just stay in a hostel where you get 6 beds in a room, so its basically a big private room

Stayed in the Bulldog last time which is nice, clean, newish etc and relatively cheap

Think hostels in amsterdam are really the best option

Have you tried a Hostel? Before you think I've gone mad, the reason I ask is because when I was looking for a hotel there a while ago, I came across a few hostels doing single sex dorms. If theres enough of you, some offer you the entire room, so you and your mates would be sorted.

I've been to the Dam many times but unfortunately not since 2000 when Ireland played Holland.

Avoid the Bulldog and Grasshopper unless you like gangs of pi**ed up loud English lads (no offence to anyone English just going on what i seen in that place) as for Hostels i can recommend this place having stayed here myself

as for coffeeshops i can recommend these places above all.

if you all want to be together, the hostel may be a good idea. Most hostels have mixed dorms as well.

When are you going? I remember going to Amsterdam in the winter, and stayed in a hotel, and it actually worked out cheaper than a hostel.

Can't remember the name of it however.

We are not planning on any serious clubbing, just going with the flow really.

We are wanting to go Fri 16th November until Sun 18th November.

We have looked at apartments and you can only book for 3 nights which would be ok because we could go Thurs instead of Fri...........but just trying to find a decent price on that and flights is proving hard.

I think we have resorted back to 2 in a room (emails flying around all afternoon) its just a bit tricky as 4 of us are in couples and the other 2 have history (even though they both dont mind going on the same trip)

Yes its confusing.

i've been quite a lot, more recently a few weeks ago.

I always stay at the Hotel Rho.

Cheap, cheerful and very central.

There's loads to do, museums, theatre, restaurants etc.

But I've never done any of them. I just go to Hill Street Blues and get monged and live on pizza slices and haribos for three days.

It's great living out my student days again.

First two times i went that's basically what i done but there is so much to see and do in the Dam that it is a shame not to see what the city has to offer and the Dutch are a friendly bunch although i cant help but raise a smile the way they speak Englsh in a sort of funny American accent

Check out the spynx hotel near the heineken brewery but make sure you've got a lot of muscle in your legs because them stairs are a nightmare.

They sound more like a mild German accent to me

Yes, that is certainly the predominant accent (understandable considering their geography and history), though the Dutch epitomise the people that learn english not only in school, but from MTV and Hollywood, and as such use a lot of Yank sayings and accents.

I personally can't stand the Dam! I understand everyone must go their once in their lives, but not for the first time in my life I was embarassed to be English, and has the complete opposite selection of vices available from what i'd want to get right stuck into!

You get dicks in every city if the world, the trick is to know where to go to avoid them.
