Advice :)

Hey all,

I will be visiting Ibiza this summer for the first time with 3 or 4 friends for 7 days, and I was hoping to get some advice on a few things:

1. What are the clubs like with larger groups? I know in the UK some places are a bit funny about groups of young males all entering together.

2. The only event that I personally feel that I must go to while there, is Manumission at Privilege on a Monday. I intend to buy the tickets online before we go. My question is, what day is the best day to start our holiday to make sure we include this event? Obviously Monday and Tuesday are out of the question, but what other events should we try to include during our week?

3. It appears as though we wil be staying in San Antonio (not the bay, the central part). I've read many comments and reviews of this area, most of them saying how bad it is. For a bunch of newbies, is it really that bad? Unfortunately we are unable to afford much, but we don't want to live in a complete sewer. Should we try to stay somewhere else? We won't be able to travel far as none of us can drive, so we need to be relatively close to the nightlife.

4. How much spending money do you think we will need, including all food, drinks, club entry and taxis?

Any help will be much appreciated, thankyou in advance :)

Hi Crollsy. Here's a few insights:

1. No club will turn away a group of people. Buy ticket, enter, have fun.

2. I personally like to arrive on Wednesday usually, but I don't think there's any real reason why one day is better to start your holiday than another. A lot will depend on when you can get the best flights, when you can get off work, etc.

Other events I'd recommend would be La Troya at Amnesia (Wed), We Love at Space (Sundays). Lots of people here would recommend Cream at Amnesia (Thursday) but if Deep Dish is back for Thursdays at Pacha then that's my pic. Pure Pacha on Friday is usually packed but I think new club Penelope has something good going on that night too. It will all depend on the party calendar (which parties and DJs return, at which clubs, on which nights) and that won't start filling up until spring.

3. You'll be fine in San An. Don't worry. There are a few decent bars around for your pre-party action, and there's the sunset strip which you'll want to visit for that famous end-of-daylight experience. If you want a couple of cheap nights out in between your big club nights, you could visit the bars and smaller nightclubs in San An's West End (though I'd advise getting yourselves over to Bora Bora in Playa d'en Bossa instead!)

4. Spending money is tough. You'll get 100 different answers from people on here about how much they spent or how expensive it is or how not-expensive it is. The missus and I did well on a budget of about $250 a day last year, if memory serves. That was average - on clubbing days we spent slightly more and on non-clubbing days much less. Keep in mind, however, that we ate out in restaurants a lot.

You can come up with your own budget based on what your average day is going to look like:
Meals: $5 (Burger King or supermarket sandwich) <-----> $50 (nice restaurant)
Drinks: $4 (beer in cheap bar) <-------> $18 (mixed drink in big club)
Club entry: $20 (El Divino) <--------> $60 (Manumission)
Cigs: $4
Taxis: Wildcard... how much will you be travelling? Are you aversed to the bus? How many of you are chipping in?

Just some random musings but hopefully somewhat helpful.

1. As morby said no club will turn away a large group, especially if you have a ticket.

2. manumission is as much an experience/show as a club night, perhaps more so, and its reputation is such that what it offers is almost unique on the island. My honest answer would depend on what you are into, do you like house/dance music? do you go clubbing in the UK? The nights Morbyd mentions are popular but essentially quite underground compared to your usual saturday night in the UK. If you aren't really into the clubbing scene, I'd recommend going to space and pacha on cheaper nights so that you can experience 2 of the world's best clubs.

3. San an will be fine, yeah its got a bad rep but there is something for everyone and its a hive of activity by day and by night. Whether you like cheap booze, quality restaurants or a bit of everything, you can find it in San An.

4. Like morby says, you will get a million different answers to this. The main thing that will drain your money is going to clubs, around £20-50 entrance and £10 a drink once inside. If you find that you're not really keen on the music/crowd/clubs, etc, then its better to just soak up the atmosphere in some of the bars around the island. for example, in San An, places like Bar M, and most of the sunset strip (Mambo, Savannah) are geared up for people either partying before going to the club or just having a drink with some cool music playing. In the west end, there are numerous smaller clubs that stay open till 6am, which have free entry and cheaper drinks.

Thanks a lot for the advice, a lot of it was very helpful, looks like San An is where we will be staying :)
To answer some of your questions: Grego, we are all into trance/techno mainly, so those are the nights that we want to be present at.
We were actually planning to arrive on a Wednesday luckily, so I'm glad to hear that this is a good day. The important thing is that we don't miss any of the biggest nights. Cream sounds pretty good.
Good call on including the cigs Morbyd, I am the only smoker but I'll still have to budget for them. Can we smoke in the big clubs though? Are there special areas or is it like the UK with the dance floor covered in a veil of cigarette smoke?
We don't intend on travelling much outside our hotel area, other than to the clubs. We all have no problem with the bus, so that is an option should we want to visit the other side of the island.
And there is nothing wrong with Burger King, I doubt we will want to eat at anywhere too fancy.
But thanks for the help, and judging from the people on this forum, I expect it will be a really great holiday :)

You can smoke in the big clubs but I've never felt that the dancefloor gets too smokey. Good ventilation systems, I guess.

I'm in the United States, will there be a problem with US money in Ibiza? Will I have to convert my US money to Euro?

Very easy, you could do it at your home airport, or when you get to Ibiza. In Ibiza, you can do it at your hotel, or your cash card from back home will work and change it there and then (with a small charge)8)

My bank was great - I only had to pay a charge of a couple of dollars for using an ATM that wasn't theirs. I got out a few hundred Euro very easily. That's probably safer than carrying around a load of cash before you get there.

Agree, I had to use an ATM quite a few times after I spent far more than i budgeted for on some nights. Actually, ended up taking about £600 out from ATM's cause I was spending far too much:? :p

I never take cash on the plane. Always just visit the bank machines on the island.

And I've never had a problem withdrawing cash from either my US or Russian bank accounts. Usually, the visa or mastercard systems give you a better exchange rate than you'll find at exchange, hotels, etc.

The only thing you need to do is check your bank's foreign ATM fee before you go. Mine at Wachovia (US) is $2 and Raiffeisen (Russia) is $3, so no big deal if you take out money every couple of days.
