6 reasons why not to have an nhs doctor.

Went to register...
1. "Sorry sir we only register patients between 2-4 on Monday's and Fridays" "Ummm why didn't they tell me this on the phone because I have to get out of work!"
2. "Sorry sir, we're too busy and aren't registering people today." "But I had to get out of work for this and it's happened twice." (Blank stare)
3. "Sorry sir, this system is down, we can't register you today." (see above)
4. "Now you've registered we need to make another appointment to see a health advisor, we can't make you an appointment until you've done this. Can you come back next week?" Grrrr!

Tried to book an appointment...
5. "Can I have a Friday afternoon appointment please?" "Sorry sir, we don't book afternoon appointments, you have to ring on the day itself."
6. "Can I book one for next Friday?" "Sorry sir, we don't book appointments that far in advance."

...and the saga continues.

cut yourself and run in bleeding profusely, im pretty sure they'd have a duty of care to assist you then ;)

"Sorry sir, you'll have to go to A&E."

"Sorry sir, we only operate A&E at this hospital on the weekend."

"Take a raffle ticket and we'll get to you when we can, there's currently a 3 day wait."

Having spent the last 16 years having fairly regular treatment via the NHS (childhood cancer of the femur leading to full endoprosthetic replacement of my left femur, hip and knee) I know well the frustrations you're having.

The actual medical care (from doctors and surgeons) has been good (when they get round to sorting the appointment and letting you throught the doors) and theres absolutley no way I could have afforded it privately but the petty administrators and lazy nursing staff have been the bane of my life at times.

For example after some fairly heavy duty surgery (involving a hip replacement - amongst other thing) i was given a spinal block anastheatic for pain relief post procedure. This is basically a tube put into the dura of the spinal column through which drugs can be injected. Waking in agony and deciding that my spinal block might not be working I advised various members of nursing staff and suggested that I might like to see a doctor. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was being a 'big baby' and couldn't be in any pain since I was being given drugs through the spinal line. Unsurprisingly 3 hours (of pain like you couldn't believe) the doctor came back down to check and found that my spinal line had slipped out and I had in fact been without anasthaetic - Grrrrrr :spank:

Christ! 8O

God help me if I ever contract anything serious!

it'll be quicker to do a medical degree than get an appointment at a time convenient for yourself.

my mate who has a swollen gonad has waited 2 yrs to get operated on.

"its probably a tear inside, we'll refer you to have an op so we can drain out the fluid buildup"

2yrs later...

has the op, is coming round from op...

"we're gonna be taking you up for a scan now, doctor said he may have found a tumour".

i going in again in 2 weeks to have offending gonad removed.

ill never be able to wear my pacha t-shirt in his presence again.

My pet hate is doctors receptionists - the Devil's Spawn IMO - they are like the Gestapo - you cannot get past then to speak to a doctor.

Few weeks ago

"Hi, I need to make an appointment to see the Dr today please?"

Ok - and what's wrong with you?"

"Errr I think I have damaged my back/neck?"

"Can you walk?"

"Err Yes"

"Then why do you need to see a Dr - have you tried Ibruprofen Gel or painkillers?"

"YES I bloody have - for 5 sodding days and now I am in bloody agony, I cant sit, lie down, move my head and am having excrutiating pains up the side of my head!!!!Make me an appointment now, or I will call the Dr out for an emergency appointment!!!":spank: :spank: :spank:

I hate it when they ask what's wrong with you - what medical training have they had apart from reading the medical problem pages in Take a Break or Chat magazine - grrrrrrrrrrrrr

My doctors is really good - but it's a private practice who take on a few colleges of students as well, so now I'm still in Oxford I'm still with them.

god bless my perfect life

(eek, ibiza!)

However one has to be wary expressing ones displeasure with receptionists and the like - the general response from them when you appear dissapointed, agitated or plain angry with the burocary you are experiencing at their hands and the fact that you can't do something as simple as book a sodding Dr's appointment without queing outside the surgery in the freezing cold on the day you want to be seen (cos they don't book for future dates) you are accused of being a difficult and/or aggressive patient and threatened with being struck from the practices register.    :spank:

And don't even get me started on surgery hours at our place - 08:30 - 12:00 Monday to Friday, one evening surgery on Wednesday 15:00 - 17:30 (but which you have to book by visiting the doctors on the Wednesday morning between 08:30 - 12:00 !! - don't these people realise that those who just need a repeat perscription signing and have a full time job can't justify 2 hours off to go and see a doctor every few weeks 8O 8O  :spank:

all this said, my surgery lets me book in a time up to a week in advance, and i can usually get the 1st 8.30am slot.

Dont talk to me about the NHS

Ive had 2 operations and loads of sh*t, plus pain, emotional crap, trauma etc etc in the last year that I didnt need to have cos of some f*ckwits incompetance 8O :x and thats all Ive had as an apology is Im sorry Sarah, the initial test that you had seems to have been misdiagnosed and you didnt have severe pre-cancerous cells after all  8O :!: and I cant sue them cos they havent removed a limb by mistake or something

Anyway rant over lol

My doctor's is really nice. Ive been there ever since I was a baby. The always manage to squeeze me in if Im feeling ill and provide good service. I had to go there this morning for some travel vaccines - had 4 big needles in my arm and now its gone numb. OW! :(

What's NHS? National health service or something?

Yes.
It's nice to have one but I'd rather it was semi private. Subsidised health care would mean you get more for your money...or I think it would anyway.
I've still not managed to get that appointment by the way!:roll:

I think it's more about your local clinic rather than the NHS itself.. Our local GP is excellent, have never not managed to get a appointment and all the doctors are really good... But live in quite a small town where they get to know you.

Also on the subject of the NHS - I hadn't been to the dentist in a LONG time.. Thought I was gonna have to go private, but went along to the NHS one and they got me a appointment and needed a couple of fillings.. Cost me £30 , would have been well over £100 private and I don't think i'd have got a better service !

So no problems here...

I have nothing but praise for the NHS, i dislocated my leg & fractured my hip and was taken to Brighton A&E, i was in surgery within 6 hours of arrival to relocate my leg & after a few days I was shipped up to St Georges in London to have 7 pins inserted in my hip to repair the damage in a 4 1/2 hour op. Apart from being pretty much left to my own devices over the Easter Bank holiday weekend all in all I received exemplery care & attention even when I could see the both the doctors & nurses under a heavy workload and people on the ward with a lot more severe injuries than my own. I was back in the comfort of my own home after 3 weeks too

I do agree though it should be semi private though

I have to admit that doctors are very anal when it comes to booking appointments and things and my doctors a right perv and its really unerving. Having said that, i have just come out of hopital having had an operation and they were excellent. All the times i had to go for pre-assessments and so on, i have never had to wait once and always been treated very well.

A friend of mine at work has a partner thats just gone private to have a vesectomy and has been in pain for 5 weeks after, supposedly something went a bit wrong 8O

Did you also know that its actually an NHS doctor when you go private anyway
