50 Years Of Las Dallias.
The archetype "Hippy bar" on the island, Las Dallias, is celebrating 50 years in existence this summer. Located in the village of Sant Carles, this bar was built by the father of the present owner, Joan Juan Mari, using to master builders & stones taken from the nearby disused tin mine. On the first day the bar opened it made 4400 pesetas selling alcohol at 1 centime a shot & good alcohol at 2 centimes!
Over the years Las Dalias has developed into a cultural centre for the island. It was the first bar to have TV in the Sant Carles area & one of the first to open a hippy market & put on live rock concerts. Famous world wide, Las Dallias re-opened for summer this week with a great party featuring live music & trance DJ's. More memorative concerts & events are planned for the rest of summer as the team at Las Dalias put together the finishing touches to their 50th anniversary summer events.

(the ibiza sun)

these are the 50th anniversary concerts planned so far to remember the bands that played there during the last 5 decades:

· july 29th: 50s (tribute to the first r'n'r bands and to the tamla motown)
· august 5th: 60s (organized by the people from flower power @ pacha)
· august 12th: 70s (pink floyd)
· august 19th: 80s (tribute to punk rock)
· august 26th: 90s (psy-trance, chillout and other alternative sounds with tribe of frog, lenny ibizarre, etc)

a surprise for this summer is the new soul bar by vaughan (funky room @ pacha) where matt casselli, willy graf and graham sahara will be djing every saturday afternoon :!:

another interesting event is the noche del arte on fridays (7pm to 1am). 10 nights in which to enter in direct contact with the creators and their work in the gardens of las dalias. between 60 and 100 artists of ibiza in an outdoor exhibition that is by far the broadest available display of the islands artistic panorama. these are the next 7 dates: 18th of june, 9th and 30th of july, 13th and 27th of august, 17th of september and 15th of october :!:

and dont forget their 2 weekly trance parties:
· namaste on wednesdays (it starts tonight)
· tribe of frog on sundays (it starts on june 27th)

no - just a tribute band and the film the wall :!:

did you know that their '69 album more (soundtrack for the movie of the same title and filmed in formentera) was inspired in ibiza and included a song called ibiza bar? :P

Actually I did! :) Apart from the film being shot in formentera. The song itself actually has nothing do with ibiza though, not explicitly anyway.

in case anybody is interested, the lyrics:

Ibiza Bar

I'm so afraid of mistakes that I made
Taking every time that I wake
I feel like a hard-boiled butter man
So give me a time when the countries will lie on the storyline if kind

Are days are made since the first page
I've lived every line that you wrote
Take me down, take me down, from the shelf above your head
So give me a time when the countries will lie on the storyline if kind

And if I live on the shelf like the rest
And if love bleeds like a sad song
Please pick-up your camera and use me again
So give me a time when the countries will lie on the storyline if kind
Yea

the other day when we stopped at their bar for a coffee i noticed that now the sugar bags come with information about the history of las dalias. i collected 3 of them:

the day of the patron saint san carlos, 4th of november 1954, las dalias held it's opening party... at the price of 1 peseta a drink, 2 for brand names. 6.600 pesetas were made (39 euros) 8)

the building of las dalias lasted 18 months and was executed by 2 officials and 2 bricklayers. for working from dawn to dusk the officials received 25 pesetas (0.15 euros) a day and the bricklayers, 10 (0.6) :o

in the 50s, due to the growing popularity of the parties in las dalias, the parishioner of san carlos started projecting cinema to compete for the soul of his flock and bring them back to the church

A Night at Las Dalias.
Las Dalias bar restaurant on the Sta Eulalia to San Carlos road held one of their Night Of Art exhibitions recently, as part of their 50th year anniversary celebrations. At each of the exhibitions there are work by various artists and sculptors from the island, with a total of over 100 taking part. There was so much on show that it would be impossible to name everyone or their works. There were sculptures by the well known Bill Fulljames, which are always both mind stimulating and erotic, others by a new sculptor Manolo Fresneda, who uses natural local stone. This is his first year but he obviously has a talent and feel for his material. Prior to becoming involved in sculpture he was leading grower of Bonsai trees, and is very proud to tell you the King Juan Carlos has one of his trees. Another artist that impressed us was Christina Pflugler who's work is of an Aboriginal style. Christina has lived on Ibiza for 23 years and started to paint in 1991 to overcome a previously stressful life. Virginia Sormani, who is almost a neighbour of ours, had a number of her works on show. Virginia is a very talented lady, she is also a qualified psychotherapist, (We think we would be one heck of a challenge for her to work on).She has spent the last year exclusively drawing Mandala's. There were so many other talented works, not all to everyone's artistic taste, but something for everyone to admire the time and love that had gone onto each piece of work It is an interesting, very casual, easy going evening, there is no pressure on anyone to buy anything as you sometimes get when you visit a gallery. The bars and restaurant are open and if you wish you can dine in the open air surrounded by beautiful paintings that range from still life to modern impressionists. The next exhibition is on Friday 30th July stating at 7pm to 1am, and in our opinion it is an event that you should try to visit at least once.
