In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below

"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."

I was just thinking about this on the tube this morning, does everyone buy a poppy for Remebrance Day, I know I always do but this year I seem to have seen less ppl wearing them :?

I've hardly seen anyone selling them. Usually we have someone come round our offices selling but not this year :? Only seen one (my local corner shop) shop selling them too and no-one on the Streets in town like usual either.

i suppose thats only to expected though, i mean we are remembering somethin that happened 87 years ago and there can't be that many survivors alive from WWI........i guess over time we just gradually forget. (although due to footage from media archives its not quite the same as centuries ago)

Lest we forget.

There was an article in our local rag that said a lot of shops weren't selling poppies as too many people try and steal the collecting jar - downright disgusting  No one at my work is wearing one and i'll bet i'll be the only one who will remember to be silent at 11.

They have sold 35 milllion though so I don't think its doing too badly. I think they might distribute through larger shops rather than street collectors these days.

Can I throw a spanner in the works for the sake of it???

When are we going to start wearing flowers for the innocent people that have died in Iraq over the last couple of years?

Oh...they're not British and didn't show bravery because they weren't soldiers - right.

I think it's lovely that people wear them and understand why it's important to remember but in light of the above I'm afraid I'm missing the point of it all.

But wearing a poppy doesn't mean you're a supporter of war, I'm the most anti-war person there is but I choose to wear one out of respect and in remembrance for the millions of people who died in WW1 and WW2.

If a date was assigned to wear a flower for all the Iraquis who have died in Iraq over the last couple if years then yes I would wear a flower on that day too.

Poppies are not worn solely for British Servicemen and Women.

As for it "happening 87 years ago" - it is to remember people who made the ultimate sacrifice in ALL wars.

I'm having a deja-vu! We have this Spotlight debate every year.

Actually I think you're right. It's not appropriate to take my anti-Iraq anger out on the poppy cause but still, I think that by association, wearing one blurs the lines of where you stand on the issue.

Of course they should be remembered, and I'll be participating in the silence to honour them as individuals...but until our troops are taken out of Iraq, I won't be wearing accessories that honour troops. They give off too many connotations that I don't want to be associated with.

...but at the same time I admit I'm sounding a bit pedantic here.

I can't help it!

Words can't describe how pissed off I am with this attitude.

As much as I could spend my time here and show your attitude up with logic, I'll pass it off as you being young/immature and trying to be different.

Is nothing safe from this kind of trolling?

I shant go on any further.

Massive, massive

sorry robder, stupid post. don't be so cynical. completely seperate issue.

I watched a thing on breakfast news this morning, and it seemed they picked the stupidest bunch of people in London to interview. 1 girl thought it was a symbol of Labour, others hadnt a clue. Seem's a lot of people don't care. I don't have a poppy cause I couldn't find a shop selling them.

Its fair enough that as new generations come along, the past gets pushed further and further to the back of peoples agenda, but we should never forget what that generation did for us or the sacrifices they made.

Ps. you're free to start wearing flowers for iraqis anytime you wish.

But I think this is the one time of year when it's irrelevant where you stand on the issue of war/Iraq/etc and you should stand up and wear your poppy with pride for all those who have lost their lives essentially for us.

Ooh we've never had a disagreement before have we  ;)

Actually, I don't think it's cynicism...you rightly said that 'stupid' people are confused by their meaning.

...AND, I said I'd happily participate in the silence and give money to the cause.

;)

Crikey!

I'm not sure I'm feeling quite that strongly about things. :?

OK, I'll wear a red flower for you all.

you wouldn't be wearing a red flower for us though, you'd be wearing it for the millions of people who sacrificed their lives so that you could enjoy the freedoms allowed to you today.

(subext = educate me please)

I didn't band personal insults around about you...I think the mature thing to do is learn to debate nicely without feeling the need to flex your ego over another. ;)

In short - be nice - it's Friday.

Great article in the paper this week how poppy sellers are NOT allowed to pin a poppy on the purchaser in case the injure them and they get sued, also sticky badges - they must allow the purchaser to stick in on themselves in case the seller gets sued for ruining clothing on said ourchaser......

f**king hell this country gets worse for blame culture....
