Bloody Hell - cant believe its been that long......

......didnt her death also have something to do with caning HTP tablets or something as well - I vaguely remember a post on here mentioning it a while back.

Her parents have apparently dropped their campaign now as well... due to lack of support or something from the Govt or media or something...

part of my dissertation at uni involved researching this event and i honestly couldn't and still can't believe how far the schedule of events were distorted by the media in order to sell some papers.

(it was like on the simpsons when they all blindly agree or do somethin on impulse......e.g- "lets build a monorail")

Maybe if the campaign was remotely based on factual information, it wouldn't have been the insignficant waste of time that it sadly was.

A sorry, sad set of circumstances all round.

Well quite, but is anything that's reported ever more than half truths and half fabrication...

Stu or anybody, can you explain why did she die because of taking too many water please?

she died because after she took a pill, panic set in and she knew that dehydration was a major side effect of taking the drug. but unfortunately, supported by her mates, she gulped down such a large amount compounded by the alcohol she'd drunk, that her body couldn't cope.

her dad who initially was saying things like "i wanna find the ba*tard who gave her the stuff" changed what he was saying about 2 weeks later to, "giving your mates water after taking this drug may not always be helpful" (not exact quote)

not surprisingly, the second comment (the real reason she died) did not get as much media coverage as the first.

So she didn't die because of extasy, she did die because of too many liquid consumption? 8O 8O

ultimately yes........but if you asked someone today about what happened, especially middle age people, they would still think she died from taking ecstasy.

Sil, The reason it was very high profile with lots of press attention was because the girl was young, white, middle class and like 10 million other children in Britain - so it was supposedly more shocking.

it was the first high profile "ecstacy" death in this country, and our media ran a huge campaign about what a shocking drug it was and what lives it ruined - and also what a "killer" drug it was.
It didn't quite report with as much force when her autopsy revealed the exact nature of her death. She did not die because of a "dodgy" pill, or an allergic reaction to it.

I know what you mean, two years ago a teenager died because he took 19 pills in two hours 8O Of course the media forgot the fact that 19 pills in two hours is a sucidie and blamed the drug, the clubbing scene and the electronic music :?

From the article linked above:

The teenager died because of "water intoxication", after consuming more than three litres of water in a very short space of time.

When too much water is consumed, tissue in the body can swell. In the case of the brain, this can lead to seizures, coma and death.

The problem - and the related drop in salt levels, hyponatremia - is more commonly encountered by endurance athletes.

In Leah's case, excessive water consumption was exacerbated by the ecstasy causing her body to release anti-diuretic hormones, stopping a normal level of urination that could have saved her.

The moral of the story appears to be "piss or die".

Neither would she have suffered from hyponatremia if she had gulped down agua con gas with its salt content.

Moral 2: Con gas is better than sin gas.

moral 3: remember not to debate the benefits of sin gas when dr.mick is around   ......hyponatre..wha???

It's the physcological effects of ecstacy that needs more media coverage. Not the usual shock tactic of not taking coz you'll die.

  he spelled psycological wrong

Wrote that then had to take a call, realised just how bad the spelling was on that.

I think spellchecks on computers play more havic with spelling. Mine is terrible compared to what it used to be.

Through laziness really.
